3 was definitely an RPG, it still had a lot of branching dialogue and "character decisions". I know they were all shallow because Bethesda don't know how to write depth, but it still was. As for it being a real Fallout game, I *do* consider it one. It nails the Fallout atmosphere even if it fucks the story and characters right up.

New Vegas was the true Fallout game we all deserve though and I'm so sad that it was made on Bethesda's god awful engine though because those games are almost unplayable these days due to how poorly that engine has aged. If NV was remade in F4's engine it would be the best game ever made.

"4 does feel very different from the other Fallouts but I don't see how it isn't an RPG. I didn't play much of 3 or New Vegas when they were released, mainly just a few years ago around when 4 came out, so I'm not that familiar with the history of the series."

all you need to know about the fallout franchise is that 1 and 2 are the best

Yeah Astral the next thing I was gonna say was the engine in 4 is way improved from New Vegas, especially noticeable when switching back and forth between playing the two like I was.

That’s a sweet deal, id probably buy it again on pc for that price and play through a couple of times even tho it’s the worst souls game (Says a lot about how good the series is)

"sotfs makes a number of balance changes its not really the same game afaik"

Well I mean SOTFS is more like an old-school traditional expansion where the base game is changed in many ways as well as adding new content. But no if we're going on strict definition I didn't buy the vanilla DS2 (vomit) as well as the expansion. I just bought the game and expansion as one.

Fallout 4 is an RPG in an extremely shallow sense. There is no meaningful or real decision making, your character's motivations and story are all pre-programmed into the entire experience, and it's extremely linear. It is better described as a sandbox shooter. It's a gun game, short and simple. It's not a role-playing one.

Well DS2 isn’t bad by any means, it just doesn’t touch the other releases in the series (even if we’re including demon souls and Bloodborne)

"New Vegas is still my favourite.
And why would you spend money on SOTFS even on a sale IIRC you hate that game's guts"

My reasons are three-fold.

1. I haven't played the SOTFS expansion. I played vanilla when it came out and DESPISED it, turned it off and never played again.

2. I want to try and enjoy the game as its own experience, maybe I'll like it if I detach it from the series.

3. I hate that my computer had Dark Souls and Dark Souls III. My eyes twitch every time I see a broken series of numbers. I needed a little icon that said Dark Souls II in the middle.

Fallout 4 is tonnes of fun and I've spent hours upon hours having a ball in that game. It's a terrible Fallout game though.

I see it like this: Does this Fallout game have The Master? Yes? Best game ever. No? Probably not the best game ever.

I've never really seen Bethesda games as deep and meaningful with decision making and complex RPG elements, there are other games with that focus. The combat is also pretty one-note, but still fun, especially in Elder Scrolls when there're spells to be cast. The fun, adventurous quests and massive, detailed world to explore and characters to interact with are the real consistent strong suits. They're perfect adventure exploration games where you make an impact on the world you're in, and in some cases get emotionally invested from spending all that time there and doing so many quests and stories in that world.

I hope their new IPs bring back real quests again. I am so sick of their bullshit radiant quests and fetch quests.

This one conversation has more depth in player choice and character development than any Bethesda game could ever fathom to achieve as a whole: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh5tvZMXYSY
