i don't like either of those songs
picasso baby, somewhereinamerica, i think versus, and the beyonce song are my favorites (NOTE: on none of those are jay-z's lyrics particularly good, and he actually comes close to ruining the last one which is, yknow, basically a beyonce song)

yeah there are a lot of good beats. that might be all i care about in a rap album. sad isn't it
|
| |
mmmmm I do need a good flow to fully appreciate it though. all about how the rhythms interact with each other

"yeah there are a lot of good beats. that might be all i care about in a rap album. sad isn't it"
I know plenty of people like that, so I wouldn't say so myself.

Although yeah the flow is an integral part for me personally; as long as there isn't a noticibly bad line, I'm fine with it

i guess it's more like i really care about good rapping, like a great performance will make a sonically pleasant album one
of my favorites. (dedication 2 is one of my favorite rap albums almost entirely due to wayne's performance, although
some of the beats are great), but i often don't care that much about bad rapping as long as the beats are good
|
| |
yeah see if the beats are really good but the rapping's poor I will really struggle to get into an album. my whole experience of that beat and how my brain perceives it depends on how the rapper fits his flow round it and if that aspect is lacking it just seems like something's missing even if I can see the quality in the beat

I personally hate the new Drake album specifically due to terrible lines:
"I just set the bar, n_ggas fall under it like a limbo"
(The computer I'm using isn't mine and has a weird autocorrect thing)
|
| |
although I don't adore drake as a rapper he's decent enough that with a bunch of really good beats it
all comes together very well

yeah i guess that's more infrequent for me
what's funny is that even as a longtime drake-liker the most pointed example for me of a truly great beat turning into a not-good song is him stumbling over the beat for "lord knows"
|
| |
yeah I can't stand that song (probably cos it's nestled among songs I do like so I always end up
listening to it)
I guess the point I'm trying to make is that with the right rapper/flow I can appreciate almost any
hip hop track regardless of the beat but the reverse doesn't work

yeah for me it's nearly the opposite, which is a concept i don't like on paper but i've come to realize it
|
| |
that being said, a great beat can amplify not-that-great rapping which I think is the case on a few tracks here
