this whole conversation is just a cliche perspective trap for any album ever that sounds exactly like an artists other albums. you can make these arguments about literally any band and the same conversations go down every time. its just a tool to vanquish alternative perspectives whilst intentionally misunderstanding the idea that that seeking growth and development must be taken at the most extreme value possible.

frankie sinatra is a jam and one of the best on here, but thats prolly my danny brown and tuba bias showing.

i didnt expect avalanches to release a avant bebop power fusion album. i expected them to grow. develop. expand their sound. experiment with new ideas. that doesnt mean they need to redefine the music industry it just means that their new album is kinda really boring.

It's not a complete rehash though, it just sounds akin to since I left you because it's their signature sound. That's their musical identity and I think it sounds superb personally. Some of these melodies are straight up gorgeous. They still have a knack for splicing samples to yield a new creative meaning from the source material.

I think they were screwed no matter what tbh, because there's no way in hell they could ever live up to expectations regardless of how good the record actually is

this band hasnt had the chance to ever develop an identity, so I guess "playing devils advocate" having them do more or less the same thing with just the slightest deviation to avoid being a carbon copy doesnt work as an excuse. They all had over a decade to pick up new styles.

Lol nah man I'm not trying to deflect or go in a roundabout argument. I love the avalanches' aesthetic, whereas you probably don't as much and were hoping for something more progressive. For me it's sort of like Nujabes: his three albums are all of the same ilk, but that signature style is so good that I don't even care.

No harm done, opinions and what not

but i liked the new record a lot, so im not that critical against it since the avalanches as a group is completely brand new to me so I dont have these expectations at all.

ok wait do you not like it cause its not a new and shows no growth in terms of the avalanches as a whole or are you saying that its not new for the musical space it occupies (plunderphonics), cause yeah this sound definitely isn't very new but its still fairly different from since i left you and is clearly trying to explore a different realm than that album did even if its over a well trodden path

"it just sounds akin to since I left you because it's their signature sound."

disagreed Tomorrows Harvest for instance still conveys BoCs signature sound without sounding exactly like their other material. Same with Third by Portishead, Heligoland by Massive Attack, King of Limbs by Radiohead... so on so forth.

"That's their musical identity and I think it sounds superb personally"

you can remain true to your musical identity without doing the same thing over and over.

" Some of these melodies are straight up gorgeous. "

i do not disagree.

"They still have a knack for splicing samples to yield a new creative meaning from the source material."

which isn't really much of a feat these days tbh.

"

seems to be getting pretty positive reception isnt it? i dont know outside from what ive glanced over, i could be wrong. anyways seems like im pretty much the only person here who thinks it isnt the tits. and thats fine.

fair enough. it just irks me when people make things black and white and i just want you to understand that expecting some kind of development does not mean i expected them to sound hyper modern or to reinvent the wheel

Yeah boards of Canada went for something a little different and the end result was an incredibly nondescript album. I'd have much rather they returned to their classics.

Different stokes. I don't care for originality when these songs sound so wonderful

Far enough brother, didn't mean to reduce your argument to that. I just thought it was a problem with it sounding too much like since I left you and therefore too trapped in 2000, for you

both but also neither. your emphasis on 'new' makes me feel you misunderstand. i dont expect them to have a 'new' sound necessarily, but i'd be much happier with it if it retained their signature vibe and sample material aesthetic but done with at least a slightly developed artistic process if you know what i mean. id rather hear something thats been done before done differently than hear something thats been done before done the same way its always been done ya know?

are there any plunderphonics or electro outfits who are sampling more modern music? that sounds cool as hell honestly.

and its not like they didnt have 17 years to grow as musicians so you'd kind of expect their creative process to be somewhat different but it sounds exactly the same here. implement some new procedures. be creative.
