But arguably they had bigger hits from their first four albums than anything since so clearly it hasn't worked out that well for them.

I mean they were already huge by the time Viva La Vida came out so arguably they could have followed in that direction and stayed popular.

At the time though? I mean Clocks, Speed of Sound, Fix You, and Viva La Vida are still probably their most popular songs overall.

I'll give you Paradise perhaps but none of their other singles since has stuck around very long.

Yellow too.

Paradise is an acceptable song, I liked it at lot back when I was a Coldplay disciple but now it and all of Mylo Xyloto do nothing for me.

Paradise is a jam agreed everything else they've done since that song ('cept Midnight) is terrible

that's the point though, they realised that they could make a whole album of cool stylistic diversions like Viva la Vida and the majority of the public just ate up the t/t and ignored the rest so they just started focusing on that simplistic pop sound

I guess you're right.

Either way Viva is still a really excellent album, it's so sad because I know they could still write great stuff but they just don't.

Cemeteries of London is probably their best song, awesome lyrics too. Don't Panic from here is up there too.

42 is such an underrated Coldplay jam.

Both halves of Lovers in Japan/Reign of Love rule too.

Also the Chinese Sleep Chant hidden track in Yes.

Yeah this is actually making me want to jam Viva La Vida.

That album might actually be 4.5 worthy even.
