The decline was far more gradual than people tend to think. Honestly, I find myself only being able to justify The Jester Race or Subterranean to be the only real albums that scratch the threshold of excellence.

Colony was the first melodic death metal album I ever heard so I got some solid nostalgia there. None with Type O Negative, I didn't get into them til later.

Oh yeah, Dark Tranquility are the better band but I think I actually enjoy early In Flames more just because it was the first band that got me into this genre. At the time I was in "what the fuck is this" mode so that stuck with me.
