these guys are great songwriters, besides the cheesy lyrics
Nope. Their song structure is actually rather simplistic. I think you meant to say that they're instrumentally talented.

Nah, I stand by what I said. But its all opinion. When I say that they're good songwriters i mean they write great riffs, and don't waste their talent. When I say a band is instrumentally talented but bad songwriters, I'd mean that they are good but waste their talent, which I don't find the case here. In my opinion, of course.

Songwriting isn't really a matter of opinion, it's a matter of fact. Now, tbh I'm not an expert when it comes to songwriting, but I think it has more to do with song composure and structure etc. How good the riffs are ties in with instrumental talent, not songwriting. At least that's always what I've thought of it as.

Hey guys can I tell people what they should think too instead of letting them form their own opinion like a normal person
Yes, you may.
Who would you compare favourably to them then?
In terms of song structure I prefer Children of Bodom, though DF have them beat in the vocal department by far.
I know that question wasn't directed at me, but meh.

I don't think there are many bands out there that are truly like DF.

How are riffs not song writing? Instrumental talent is the execution. Making up a good riff is part of writing a song, just like structure, melody etc. is. A riff is a melodic phrase or ostinate. Writing it is obviously part of writing a song.

I still don't own this album, but have several songs from it. I gotta say, there is an astounding number of people out there who are approaching this album the wrong way.
DragonForce are playing intensely energetic metal that's meant to get, as ZP Theart put it at Ozzfest, "your asses off your seats and your hands in the air." Yes, the songwriting is repetitive, but you forgive that because of the rush of energy you get.
People have criticized them for having a video game sound. Drr-hey! The truth is that a lot of video games actually have very catchy, hook-filled, and infectious soundtracks. Nobuo Uematsu (I know I probably spelled that wrong) has been composing the soundtracks for the Final Fantasy series for years and has created some very memorable tunes. He even has his project, The Black Mages, in which he creates metal remixes of his songs. Many of his works also require a respectable level of musicianship to play correctly.
With that in mind, the union of video game soundtracks and power metal is actually rather intuitive. DragonForce just took it to a level no one else had and unabashedly admitted it.
You also can't say that they don't progress musically. Compare Valley of the Damned to Inhuman Rampage. The increased level of sound effects, the more prominent keyboards in the mix, the adding of harsh vocals at certain points... DragonForce are experimenting with their sound, but they're doing it in baby steps. They have a formula that they enjoy playing and they stick to it, but they're not afraid of adding a little extra spice to the mix on each album.
There are some legitimate complaints that critics have, but I'm astounded by the number of people who are approaching this album in the entirely... wrong... way. This is not super-artistic, uber-pretentious prog. This is not how-low-can-you-go death/black/grind. It's a band with a huge focus on musicianship out to create albums that make you want to rock the fuck out! I injured my neck last week headbanging to Through the Fire and Flames, but it was worth it. The music is just... fun. And it disappoints me that so many people don't attempt to see things from that perspective.

The BBC did an adaptation of the novels a few years back. The actor who played Professor Prunesquallor described the books as "Charles Dickens on crack." Pretty accurate assessment, I'd say.

Yes, they are simplistic if you look at them from afar. But if you look at them closly, you can see the differnent patterns.
It's like a quilt with a design on it, then you look closly to see the weave pattern had something to so with the design.
Yes I know most of their songs tak on the same order.
intro//verse// pre chorus// chorus// verse// pre chorus// chorus// instrumental (breakdown)// solos// pre chorus// chorus// outro
they all pretty much take on this pattern. But sam said "I know e've stuck to the same pattern, but what we play during the patterns is different eveytime"
Even classical works have a basis of patterns.

Not to mention there guitarist aren't as good as they sound. Dimeback could kick there asses.

There can't be an argument because they both (Hammet, Dimebag) suck either way. But still...

I'm gonna disagree in a better and more thought out way.
I can defenatly see were you are coming from with the hard rock thing but in now way shape or form is this scraping the boundries of hard rock. They both use the blues scale, much like almost every metal/rock band, but hard more is more rhythmic and this is just fast as hell on the blues scale. And just in general this is alot faster. Compare this to, like mudvaynian said, AC/DC and Aerosmith and you will see your mistakes. But the last song is a bit hair metal I must say.

I see a hint of hair metal in 'Trail of Broken Hearts', but but only because of the lyrics and the ballad-y sound.

I really have tried to like Dragonforce, but it's no good. I can understand why they have a faithful following - they are very easy listening. It's all very boppy stuff. They remind me of when I used to own a turntable and I'd play regular 33 rpm records at the 45 or 78 speed for a laugh. Oddly though, the faster Dragonforce play, the longer their songs seem to get - bizarre. I honestly think there is more content in 3 or 4 minute COB song that a 7 or 8 minute Dragonforce song, even though Dragonforce may play two or three times as many notes. Although, I must admit that they sound like they would be entertaining live. I wonder if their singer will convince them to come to South Africa. . .
