This is well-written, but it is as pointless as the album itself.
Either this album is so bad that it cannot even be considered art, or it is just simply really bad art. Nothing more, nothing less. Whether it is a "statement", what kind of "statement" it is, what it's intentions are, what our response should be, are all rabbit trails.
The main point is, this is bad music by any standard of music, even current music. If this album or a similar attempt at creating music was made by your dorm mate or your kid cousin, you would laugh, give 'em a pat on the back and say "nice try, but this is fucking terrible". And that would be the end of the matter. You wouldn't start pondering the line between subjective truth and objective truth, artistic merit, and the definition of music itself just because of some amateur messing around.
The only reason anyone has any knowledge of this is because a TV network decided to exploit her stupidity and give her antics a national audience, instead of the 20 people that would normally care about her life. And it's pretty safe to say the only reason she did this is because she knew that there were a bunch of dumbasses who would blindly listen. It's purely a vanity project.
This album raises no new questions and does not answer any questions we already have. It is really quite worthless, and should be considered as such.

i wonder though, if this exists, and we hear it, what do we do with the thoughts that say it says something meaningful even though we know it doesnt

RosaParks: you can find deep meaning in a pile of shit or a used cigarette butt. Doesn't make it good art. And you can find deep meaning (not sure what this says about you, but whatever) in this album, if you want. Doesn't make it good music.

it's not horrible though. some of it is kind of fun. it just bugs me when people try to tell me that this album is some sort of transcendent piece of avant-garde art because, uh, have you seen an interview with this chick? let's get real here. this is experimental pop music that could have worked out, but didn't in the end.

I don't care at all about intentions or merit of the artist. John Lennon didn't INTEND to be the worldwide voice of peace when he started playing music, he just wanted to have some fun with his buddies. Doesn't mean his impact is invalid. Plenty of unqualified, uneducated people with no credentials or official MERIT have still created beautiful music. Their lack of training or merit doesn't make their impact invalid.
Intentions and merit don't make any difference to me. I am talking strictly about musical quality, or lack thereof. "Something you can find meaning in" is NOT a substitute for musical quality. As previously stated, meaning can be found in things outside of art, and just the fact that they have meaning to you does not make them art in the broader sense.

And yeah agreed Aids, she wasn't trying to make any big statement...she was just trying to make something cool because she saw a chance for publicity, and failed miserably. That's all this is.

ok I just read the review again, and it actually speaks to the point of my previous post pretty directly and effectively. so, Downer, if you're still bothering to read this thread (you aren't): good job.
oh and also, this: The initial response for the majority of everyone seems to be laughter and derision, which is understandable because My Teenage Dream Ended sounds pretty dick by any traditional standard.
is why I love you. Adam Downer, sputnikmusic.com STAFF

love you too aids =)
and i never said that because it's arguably interesting, it's quality. and if you believe this:
I don't care at all about intentions or merit of the artist.
then this shouldn't matter:
she was just trying to make something cool because she saw a chance for publicity, and failed
miserably. That's all this is.
if you believe the first statement, it should follow that you are examining the music in a vacuum,
and you're certainly entitled to hate it. My entire point is basically to question all the outside
factors that are informing the natural backlash to this and look at the weird music, which I find
kinda cool, actually.
and
i wonder also, as i realize that the above sentence exists, what do i do with the thoughts
that say your full of shit, even though i know you're probably just high and chronically
overthinking
hey now

Best review I've seen in this site so far. Specially the part about the little triangles instead of the vocals on a black cover. We should try to trick hipsters and turn them into brainlessly Farrah-adoring zombies, right now.
