"lol "eclectic". These guys are a pathetically watered down retread of California-era Mr Bungle. They do half of the things that band did, and they do it half as well. It comes off as contrived and tiresome. Even saying that is sugar coating it"
If you say so. Still funny you have New Dawn and Smoke Bomb 4.5'd. Their style hasn't changed THAT significantly. The Patton/FNM/Mr. Bungle influence has been there since the beginning.

I would rate New Dawn a 2.5 now and Smoke Bomb a 3.5. Smoke Bomb had a certain spark that this doesn't. The songwriting was much more visceral and their sound felt fresher, but now they're just repeating themselves. If a band is exciting and has a nicely rounded sound so early on, it's cool, so when you put this album in context, it really isn't anything special

I can see what you mean by Smoke Bomb having a certain spark that this doesn't, as it's a more energetic release overall. However save for Manufacture of Consent, I'd say the songwriting there is a lot more repetitive than it is on this. The way I see it, they didn't particularly overhaul their sound here, but they did expand it(I also appreciated the much clearer production, which I believe I remember you disliking). There's quite a bit of variety in this release unless you want to say that the mere fact that a lot of the songs "genre-hop" means that it's stylistically limited. Personally I don't even notice the genre-hopping in most songs when listening nowdays, as I find it all comes together quite well. Each to their own though I suppose.

Yeah the genre hopping strikes me as contrived and predictable (obviously, within the context of their discography, because obviously, most bands don't 'genre-hop'). And you're right, I hate the production. It's much too clean and sparse. Even when there's layering, it's just too polite and uninteresting

When did I ever say Sound Awake was the best album ever made? It's one of my favourites, definitely in the top ten, but by no means have I ever made such a ridiculous claim

Figured I would give a listen since they are coming in concert with Periphery in a month. The music itself is pretty good. But the dudes voice...ruins the whole thing.

He doesn't necessarily have a terrible voice. But it just doesn't mesh well with the music at all.
