"I also hated the two albums after Cities"

Really? I think all of their stuff is solid. I haven't been disappointed by them yet. I also don't think Cities is the greatest thing ever like a lot of people here seem to. I didn't even know it was their most popular album until I got on Sputnik. My least favorite is NTFP but I've been listening to it a little bit here and there lately and it's been growing on me.

I saw these guys open for the Smashing Pumpkins the other day in LA and I was pretty disappointed.

I find Anberlin to be really inconsistent live. They were great in LA last year when they co-headlined with Switchfoot, but I've heard Christian sing pretty badly live too. But when he's on, boy are they good.

I dunno though, maybe they're not your type of band. I don't think Anberlin is necessarily a band to get hyped up about, even though they're really good at what they make. (That's from your comment about you being 'disappointed' though that could've been a reference to their live performance vs. studio album.)

Anyways a 2's pretty low. Care to share what you disliked about the album? It's hard to find anyone here with a dissenting opinoin

Production and live shows mean nothing to me, since I generally listen to this stuff through my crappy laptop or car speakers and no bands I like ever come near where I live.

So I'm loving this.

Seriously, I've been listening to Modern Age over and over to see what you people are talking about with the production. I literally hear no problems with the production and I'm listening to the CD on my laptop, with some great Sennheiser headphones. Someone please explain.

I also listen to this album with Sennheisers on my laptop, and it's definitely both overproduced and a little compressed. It's definitely not the best production they've had, which is disappointing considering Aaron Sprinkle worked on it.

Maybe I'm just weird. I like the production on this album.

Innocent has turned from my fave song here to my least fave song pretty quickly, vice verses for other side

Despite what audiophiles will tell you, there's nothing wrong with what I'm about to tell you: You

just don't have an ear for it. If you can't hear the odd production on the chorus of Modern Age,

well good for you, since it's a little annoying. Doesn't ruin the song but it'd be nice if it

weren't there.

I've been listening on my fairly shitty laptop speakers, so I can't be specific on how bad the

compression is, but it's fairly obvious how the layers just kind of melt together. It just doesn't

sound crisp, which is really weird for an Anberlin album. I'm thinking of something like 'Art of

War' that has its different, distinct layers.

It might not even be overproduction but simply Anberlin trying to cram in too much into their songs;

there's vocals, guitar, bass, drums, synths, and then all those subtle things. I remember someone

comparing music to film or something, where you can't have so much going on in the foreground and

background or the audience won't be able to keep up. I think it's something like that on here.

I'm pretty sure there's a tambourine in the background of Modern Age's chorus too. It's literally the only thing I can hear now.

No it's just the hi-hats, but I can see how you could have thought it was a tambourine.

Ironically in the verse I think he is hitting a tambourine on the snare notes though.

Oh god he is, now I can only hear that. It doesn't matter, Modern Age is my song of the year- shitty quality be damned.

I've been listening to this pretty much exclusively for the past week, and I think I have a handle on my opinions.

This is definitely their best work since Cities, nowhere near perfect though. "Innocent" and "Modern Age" fall into the same lyrical trap Dark is the Way did, although in much more interesting fashion, to be fair. "Innocent" is the only weak track on this though.

"Little Tyrants" is definitely the spiritual successor to "Godspeed" in every possible way, which I love. "Intentions" is so fucking catchy, which makes up for how poppy it is. "Type Three", "God Drugs and Sex", and "Other Side" are great for slow Anberlin songs.

So far I'm hearing overused harmonies for the vocals. The music besides that is cool though. I don't
think alt rock is my thing, because I've hear enough of it on the radio.

If we're speaking of spiritual successors, it's worth pointing out that Desires strikes me as the successor to To The Wolves, only better in every sense. Similar lyrical topics and levels of aggression... Desires even has a somewhat disappointing chorus like To The Wolves.
