Some songs are hit or miss for me. I feel like their other albums brought the bottom up, but they took risks on this album and let me down on a few tracks. That said, holy shit, some of the songs on this album are ridiculously good.



Pretty sure Tom's guitars on Savers are the reason why I love that song so much.



I read both reviews and I enjoyed them both, but I definitely liked Chan's more. His paragraph:



"Vacation switches things up. It's the first truly different thing they've done. They've branched out from the usual ska-influenced punk, and it stands to reason that this is the album that will test their mettle as a band. While Rosenstock's lyrics have always been a strong point, how much of that had to do with the interplay between his voice and the music? Before Vacation, I would have said “not much.” But now I'm not sure. Vacation is their first “rock record,” and it does sound as if something's missing. The punch is gone from their music. I think if they make another album like this they can iron out the kinks and make a classic because the songs are there but the X-factor isn't. “Savers” is probably the best example of this. A mid-tempo song that plods along for two minutes too long, it really only picks up for the last minute or so, when a second guitar comes in along with an unexpected, pleasantly surprising violin. It's the typical BTMI! formula – add elements gradually until the song explodes – but it's exacted through typical rock instrumentation and the result is boring."



That's hitting the nail on the fucking head! His review could have just been that paragraph and I would have pointed at my computer and yelled "THIS!" Cuz it's the damn truth. But is that "the problem" with this album? I don't think so. I think it's just something that fans of BTMI! will be upset about, because BTMI! is trying to prove that they're more than an obnoxious, hyperactive Rosenstock-led punk troupe. It's a tough sell, but I do feel that the musical arrangements on this album do more than "typical rock instrumentation" with a boring result. This is pretty creative shit.



Felt Just Like Vacation is a really grown-up ASOB song. Blatantly.

Chan's a better reviewer than most.
