A requiem for Zomby’s departed father, Dedication is the dubstep equivalent of a funeral march. Whereas Zomby’s previous effort, 2008’s Where Were U in 92?, played like a goofy ode to 90’s rave culture, Zomby’s sophomore release forsakes the party vibes of its predecessor for something far more austere and introspective. Despite its dour origins, Dedication never wallows in its sorrow, and much like that other anonymous dubstep wunderkind, Burial, its productions are equal parts danceable and thought-provoking. While Burial favors bleaker, more emotionally sterile territory, however, Dedication is disarmingly emotive, demonstrating the sort of grace and poignancy that dubstep, often perceived as a superficial flavor-of-the-month, is capable of.

I've got my doubts as to whether or not people would be calling this dubstep if he hadn't been labelled a dubstep producer early in his career because of his early releases.

Why? Everything in here smacks of the genre

That's not even a moderately justifiable defense.

Actually it is, especially when you realise that hip hop and dubstep producers approach their music in a similar fashion - they're beats

Anyway, Dev, I've been meaning to ask you: Forever ago I found this dubstep producer who would actually sound like dub (like Reggae dub). Do you know who I'm talking about or any dubstep artists like that since I've been looking for it again for forever.

Well it could be maybe one of several hundred producers. Got any clues?

I know that but I mean, if an instrumental hip-hop release literally just got one sample and looped it for two or so minutes I wouldn't really consider that a track no matter how nice the sample might be, nahmean?

lol no, but I guess it doesn't matter since I was just looking for that sound. What are some producers who do that, then?

No, I don't know what you nahmean, white boy

But it's not as if the song is simply the loop, the loop is his frame, his "beat" for lack of a better word. And he just simply adds to it

I guess I shouldn't say this entire thing, but a lot of the tracks on here don't fit IMO: Florence, Haunted, Basquiat, Riding with Death, Vanquish, Nat's Song. Let me know if I'm wrong on any of these, because I could be.

Tracks like Lucifer, Digital Rain, and Mozaik I'd definitely call dubstep, but some of the other ones are pretty borderline too. I just don't think the album as a whole fits it well enough to just label it as a dubstep album, there's tons of other stuff going on here too.

I could make cases for Nat's Song and Haunted, but the point is (well actually the point isn't to worry about what kind of genre it is) but nothing should ever be obvious. You can be a producer in one particular field, but that doesn't mean you can't explore elsewhere, can't borrow a little from here or there
