Vektor's 'Black Future' is a weak attempt at combining the technicality of Coroner with the progressive aspect and space themes of Voivod. Sounds great right? No, the band fails on multiple fronts, but where they actually succeed is with the vocals. Vocalist Disanto has his own style and lets out some fantastic throaty screams throughout the record.

This band is praised by delusional, deaf, idiots who proclaim Vektor as thrash revivalists. The only difference between Vektor and the rest of the generic thrash bands is where they get their inspiration. In one corner you got the generic Bay Area inspired bands and in the other you have the technical wank bands like Vektor that look to Montreal.

Now the most important thing in metal is the riffs. If you can't deliver memorable riffs, it's time to put down the guitar and move on. Thrash bands are a dime a dozen and there are many who 'write' the most generic riffs that end up on those truly uninspired songs. Vektor is one of those bands. It's all technical wanking over the fretboard and the guitar solos are trash; your typical sweep picking because I can garbage. There are too many notes crammed into the songs and too many cheesy melodies.

The album is over an hour long which is just ridiculous. Thrash is known for speed, but of of course quality should come first. Vektor gives us 3 songs over 10 minutes that are exhaustingly over-long and totally forgettable. The song 'Forests of Legend' starts out interesting but then falls into the same pattern as the other garbage and you then have to suffer through an additional 4-5 minutes of 'material.'

Avoid this cold, calculated, mechanical chugfest of space wankery. 'Black Future' is both overrated and an insult to the thrash genre.

Want a classic thrash album? Check 'Beneath the Remains' by Sepultura which slays this record.
