haha at someguest i definitely agree, but i think we can agree Smith was never the happiest guy
|

I guess I can agree to that. It's easy for me to relate to his music. It seems vulnerable, lacking self-esteem as if it's dreading the moment where someone will listen to it. The feeling that he'll never truly be happy is evident in all his material that I've heard, and I think it's something the more cynical of us can really appreciate.

don't get me wrong i'm not arguing that the album/song itself isn't depressing, just the effect it has on me is different, if that makes sense. i think he has this uncanny skill to come off relatable to the listener which makes even his 'darkest' songs appealing. that's what i find soothing, not the actual music/lyrics/you get me

their definitely similar in that way fsharp. Only difference is Smith got to experience acclaim, fame and a huge, dedicated fan base in his lifetime, while Nick Drake got none of that until years and years after his suicide.

@Rom I definitely can see that. I can see how somebody can find that soothing. And it kind of is for me too, but when I look at his first two records, considering the lyrical content, rawness and lonely sound it gives off, I get two incredibly dark albums. But they can be looked at a lot of ways. Hes definitely a brilliant lyricist, and did make a lot of his songs able to channel others too feel the same way, but for me it doesn't take away how crushing and dark some of the lines are, and especially the way he sings them sometimes. I think we can all agree dark or not, hes provided some of the most emotionally powerful music ever written.

to me the biggest misconception about elliott were that his songs were self-portraits. they're just stories with relatable themes and morals.

A lot of his early work is based on his own experiences.

i guess but for example a lot of songs have a drug addiction theme here but he wasn't even really a drug addict around the time this album came out, just an alcoholic.
other than singing about the abuse he went through as a child, i don't think his writing ever got too specific. roman candle has a lot of story/fables(condor ave, no name 2, drive all over town).

also progmaster the worst of smith's depression and abuse came around the either or/xo period and peaked after figure 8 was
released. ultimately i think the connection between his personal life and his music is incredibly exaggerated. that's why after the
self-titled he tried to explore more diverse moods.

This album means so much to me. Unlike some people I've met, Smith's music, while undeniably dark and depressing, isn't necessarily monochromatic. There's a certain humour to some of his writing, and hope, although faint, is still there at times.
