I agree that the instrumentation is nothing special. the lyrics are the main draw here

If you don't think the instrumentation is on par, try their album "Left or Leaving" - it has, IMO, a lot more to offer, and has a lot more diversity. The lyrics are still obv amazing, although not quite as brilliant as on this.

this could be the shittiest sounding piece of....shit (musically) and I would still 5/5 with these lyrics
that said, I quite like a lot of the music. Most of it isn't anything special, agreed, but I would kind of argue that that's almost the point. That's the sort of songwriting that works for lyrically driven music like this. But for a good example of what this band can be musically, listen to the ending of Plea From A Cat Named Virtute. The slow build-up following "I swear I'm gonna bite you hard and taste your tinny blood...if you don't stop those self-defeating lies you've been repeating since the day you brought me home. I know you're strong." That shit jams

Left and leaving is a lot more interesting musically
And I probably like it more now?

Agree so hard on the build-up in "Plea from a Cat Named Virtute". Amazing.

agreed and agreed. I never thought this wouldn't be my favourite Weakerthans album but I'm head over heels in love with Left and Leaving.

the track Left and Leaving has got to be one of the most brilliant lyrical songs ever
"every birthday card I threw away" kills me every time

Ill probably listen to this tonight and tomorrow because I've been meaning to listen to it for so long.

And his father laughed and talked on the long ride home
And his mother laughed and talked on the long ride home
And he thought about how everyone dies someday
And when tomorrow gets here, where will yesterday be
And fell asleep in his brand new winter coat

woah. The album hits hard and I really enjoyed this first listen, as of now I can say this album to me is a strong 8/10 but will probably move up when I listen to it again in 2 days or sometime, For the most part I understood the songs but I was left a bit confused at some of them and the last song really hits hard.
