Napalm Death did it too. The dead dove is used a lot for things like the death of peace

This album is weird in a way that actually fucking rules

Its their "worst" but still rules lol.

It's... confusing. The title track goes pretty hard tho, the intro is just awesome.

eh the ideas by themselves are cool but they don't mesh them well here. feels overambitious but not in a good way to me.
sometimes its done well but most of the time is not

Friendly reminder this is freaking awesome and one of the most underrated albums of all time

Imagine getting here after Mysteriis and listening to that extremely boring opener. That's how you get underrated. And it only improves a little after that.
That spoken word on In The Lies blergh. Oh then come the blasts at last NO back to some proggish avant-garde. It's just a chore listening to this.
Wolf's Lair Abyss though, there's an underrated Mayhem.

You're making war. I'm making oatmeal raisin cookies. We are not the same.

yoooo ins i actually just listened to this last night. what a bizarre album. kind of love it though. so many weird riffs, time changes, vocals, everything lol. i especially really dig completion in science and agony which sounds like a demented black sabbath song.

What a god awful opening track

This is pretty bold for a follow-up to DMDS. I actually quite like it, despite my very low expectations based on the t/t. Also had to switch to the remaster because the original is mixed like shit and the drums sound terrible. Overall though I’m kinda impressed they went this direction and it’s honestly pretty well done too. Not the smoothest album ever but it’s interesting.

yeah i'm torn on the mix. i understand why they went with an ultra pristine clean mix as an artistic choice based on the themes of the album.
but i did go and listen to the remaster after and it does sound more natural. i do prefer it. just such a bizarre album. i love a album that actually challenges you. never heard anything like it. the trip hop track is actually pretty sweet lol

It would’ve been so easy for Mayhem to go the safe and expected route, so if nothing else they deserve points for trying something risky. There’s some cool ideas here. I get the idea of the production choice but it’s just objectively less enjoyable with that clinical tin-like sound design and the clicky as fuck drumming. The music is actually improved with a beefier tone.

yeah i can't even fathom the reaction this got when it first came out lol. there must've been riots! for sure about the production, really interesting to hear a mix that so fundamentally changes an album.
