straight out of some boy band. *wince*

"JUST . . . WANT TO ROT . . . IN A GRAVE . . .
. . . MAYBE NOT . . .
. . . DON'T WANT TO ROT . . ."
all in the same repeated melody. i laugh my head off every time.

this album makes me look forward to their next album. id like to think that this slight change in direction can lead to something good, even if they stumbled on their first attempt.

I wrote this messy intro like two weeks ago but I'm never going to finish the review so here you go:
For one reason or another I’ve personally always thought of Tera Melos’ psychotic brand of math-whatthefuck as “musician’s music”. Although that sounds pretentious, hear me out; from the bunch of people I’ve forced the Melodies upon, it’s from my very own observations that only those who were capable of analyzing the album from a theoretical point of view really understood exactly what they were hearing. To the regular listener the stop-start rhythms, incessant time signature changes and abrasive stabs of pedal noise and general guitar wanking aren’t admittedly all that accessible, but I feel like the most attractive feature that comes with the band is deciphering the music itself whilst being constantly overwhelmed at their proficiency and technicality in terms of their instrumentality. Basically, I spend their entire catalogue thinking “How the fuck do they do that?” and that's more than enough to satisfy me without any particularly catchy hooks or glaring melodic segments (even though there were plenty). With Patagonian Rats, this has all changed; Tera Melos have finally succeeded in integrating the catchy vocals that they’d always dreamed of adding and have subsequently injected the healthy dose of accessibility into their sound that will broaden their audience significantly. In the process of this, they’ve also made what will inevitably be a seminal landmark in the progression of pop music in general.

yeah real nice writing
i actually agree with most of what you said, except the point where we differ is how successfully the vocals were incorporated.
|

I mean the other guys already said it's well-written, which it obviously is, I'd love to see you finish it honestly... but this...
In the process of this, they’ve also made what will inevitably be a seminal landmark in the progression of pop music in general.
really irks me. I mean not only is it a bit rash, it just seems pretty unfounded idk. Nonetheless I'd definitely read the rest if you decide to post!

well i actually read something on another website's review that really resonated with me. it spoke about the progression of pop music, and how the real ground-breaking, genre-defining albums (abbey road, pet sounds, a night at the opera, etc) always strayed from the traditional criteria of pop at the time and experimented with a totally new approach. i'm not really talking about pop as a genre of such, more like anything that produces a huge mainstream following at any point in time. this isn't to say patagonian rats is going to hit the radio overnight - i'm just implying that this could be the beginning of something ridiculously unique and extremely seminal. think at the drive-in's relationship of command for an example of the kind of success tera melos are capable of.

I see what you're saying now (didn't before, admittedly) but I would be absolutely floored if this was the album to do that sort of thing... just don't think it's going to be any near that level of influence or reach that type of standard

or gonna influence anything
that's a bit unfounded. i've had the most obscure, unoriginal bands influence my playing. i'm sure people who enjoy this will find something to borrow from.

they won't do it with this album, but if they can refine this math-pop thing they've got going on here it'll be interesting to see what happens.
and this is far more innovative than you're giving it credit for chambered.
