RIP hard. So I started listening to this and I really like it. Genuine question though: as someone who knows pretty much nothing about soul/r & b, what makes this a 4.4?

This is an album that gets better on multiple listens imo. The more hip hop inspired direction really shines thru cuz of various collaborators (Q-Tip, Questlove, James Poyser, DJ Premier, etc) and adds a new layer that wasn't present on Brown Sugar along with the more-present live instrumentation this album favors over its predecessor. I'd say this had much more wide appeal because of factors like that, whereas BS will appeal more to R&B/soul traditionalists. D'angelo himself also had a very wide vocal range which makes him compliment the music a lot better than your average singer. Add that to his songwriting and lyrical ability and everything just comes together wonderfully

Jamming this today in his honor. It never truly clicked, but there’s always a chance.

Oh damn that funky section at the end of Gin. And nice I get that! Again, enjoying this a lot and I’ll have to pay attention to his lyrics.
