It's not always about technical playing imo. For example I don't care at all for Satriani/Steve Vai and what not. I hate when the guitar sounds like it was played by a machine.

all im saying is I find a lot of the guitar sounds too harsh. but thats obviously Rick's fault. the softer songs like Scar Tissue are great. close to SRV's sound

I hate this argument so much. It just says to me that you haven't really listened to all that much Satriani or Vai, and on the occasions that you have you've been blinded by the flash. Both guys are occasionally susceptible to wanking, but there's also incredible amounts of soul in the way they play.
