Still one of the best albums of the decade.

I found this one to be underwhelming compared to his other work.

I think I felt similarly on the first listen or two, but it clicked soon enough.

Def a grower.

I'll give it a time I guess.

I don't like this as much as Ecailles or Kodama, but I like it a lot. It took some time for me too, but i think it is as good as Voyages and Shelter which I both have the same rating.
If you're a fan of his other stuff I think you'll come to appreciate it.

t/t is the best in here actually.

This album had a huge impact on me because I had never heard anything like it when it came out and for a long time I actually preferred it to Moon Scales. Nowadays it doesn't hold up as well, but it is always a good go to when I want to listen to something not metal.

I love how this and Ecailles de Lune go together so well. This album feels like day time - out in nature, all beautiful - and then Ecailles de Lune is like wondering into a mystical, dark area at night time. I realise that sounds pretentious as fuck but basically Souvenirs gives me a Spring/nature/day vibe and Ecailles gives me a watery/mystical/night vibe.

that doesn't sound pretentious, it's pretty spot on man.

I feel the same way about Écailles and Voyages. This and Écailles are a bit too different in style and production to be seen as two sides of a coin imo, wheras Écailles and Voyages are also sisters in sound so I personally think it fits better

@Dungeon thanks man
@RikRoach I feel you. Never really liked Voyages all that much, though, and the atmosphere for me is a fair bit weaker than the first two albums. Although you could almost make it a trilogy if you want haha I think Voyages has more of a summery/leafy/foresty vibe which is different to how this sounds to me.

Leafy and foresty definitely fit. I like to think of them as counterparts, like ocean and forest, night and day, snow and leaves, things like that. I personally like Voyages just as much as this one, but it took some time to grow. Faiseurs and t/t are first-class Alcest though

Read on the bakd's Facebook that it was this album's 10th anniversary yesterday so I gave it a go. Good stuff, might be my favorite I've heard from them so far. Also I thought this was considered their magnum opus but it's only their third highest rated here, what's up with that?
I always thought that Shelter was their only album without any metal on it but I didn't hear any metal here really, just shoegaze/post-rock/dream pop.
|
| |
nah most alcest fans i've talked to prefer ecailles and kodama over this. the ratings are comparable anyways
|
| |
" Also I thought this was considered their magnum opus but it's only their third highest rated here, what's up with that?" I expect that its because this is their least "metal" album. (I know shelter exists but that is commonly considered one of their worst)

5 this or derp

"I didn't hear any metal here really, just shoegaze/post-rock/dream pop." Correct, though there is a Black Metal influence here.

This was their magnum opus 10 years ago haha, but then they released everything afterwards and kinda outdid themselves
