Well worth the wait.

Appreciated.

I made it through four tracks last night and had to stop. I'll give the rest of it a shot sometime over the weekend. It's so boring, and I generally kind of like stuff of this nature.

I’m pretty sure “Stack Is The New Black” ranks lower then “average”.

I'll presume you were tired Cush... It's not that bad.
CTS, I was joking mate. It won't be Short Stack.

Doesn’t mean it’s not lower then average.
Edit: As a casual listener should I just get the recommended tracks or the whole album?

Ummm, probably just the recommended tracks, but add 'Crawl' & 'Lights Out' to the list if you prefer slightly heavier stuff.

It was like 1 in morning and I was on my way home from recording an awesome blues rock band...might have had something to do with it. I'll give it another go tonight.
Review is solid as always.

Ahhh, the old 1 in the morning listen. I did one of them Friday night & had no idea what was going on. Then again, it was A Day To Remember & sometimes I think they do have no idea what type of music they wanna play. Haha.
Thanks.

As much as your comment may seem like a throwaway one Tom, I sort of agree with the theory behind it. I definitely have their middle 2 albums at that rating since I like a few songs a lot, but depth is a query. I'd probably have to go back to check out their debut as I haven't heard it for yonks. I couldn't rate this latest release a 3.5 however. It's a step down for mine, probably in the "amount of songs I like a lot" stakes.

It certainly is worse than their others, and Phobia was worse then the ones before it...but not enough to warrent a whole .5 difference in rating. I guess I could round down instead of up, but when it gets that tricky I go for the rating I naturally grab rather than think it through.

Totally agree with this theory. Thinking it through just gives me a headache. It's so much easier when you are rating an album that you are not reviewing though.

as much as i used to love these guys, this album is far better than their rest. still requires work to pull away from the 'mainstream' vibe, but still a good album to listen to. much like phobia

Hey, Acey's back. I haven't come across you in a long time man. What's doin?
Your comment confuses me a little. You say you used to love them, but this is better than the rest & then only rate it a 3. So you loved their past albums but rated them lower than a 3? That's the way it reads.

In my opinion, their most mature album to date. I like it better than We Are Not Alone and Phobia but less than Saturate. Check it out.
My Song Ratings:
1. Fade Away-A great opening that surprisingly reminds me of The Diary of Jane even though they don't sound the same. Weird. 9/10
2. I Will Not Bow-One of Breaking Benjamin's best songs. I personally find it better than Diary of Jane. I really got into the chorus and the heavy riffs. 10/10
3. Crawl- LIVE! FIGHT! Crawl back inside! Once again, really got into the chorus. This is one of the heavier tracks on the list. 9.5/10
4. Give Me A Sign-I can't tell whether this is a ballad or not. Doesn't feel that way. But whatever it is, it's a slower song and one of the most stand out-ish songs on the album. 9/10
5. Hopeless-A metal song really. Heavier than all the rest of the album, but really cool. Sounds to me like it is about him wanted to die but he can't do it himself. Kinda badass. 9.5/10
6. What Lies Beneath-Another one of my favorites. A great opening and just when you think it's a slow song, it gets heavy. Amazing. 10/10
7. Anthem of the Angels-Now we take a little break with the song I believe is about his grandfather. It's a beautiful song, and one of the more emotional songs on Dear Agony. 9/10
8. Lights Out-Back to heaviness. And they sure do a good job with it. One of the highlights of the track for me. 9.5/10
9. Dear Agony-This song is a true ballad, and a damn good one. This really is talking about what Burnley goes through every day. Like Anthem of the Angels, a beautiful song. 10/10
10. Into The Nothing-After Dear Agony ends, we go Into The Nothing. A great song that makes me think of Romeo and Juliet. Why? I dunno, but nonetheless Into The Nothing is one of the best tracks on the CD. 9/10
11. Without You-Last song goes out with a bang...kind of. It starts out heavy through the song, then the last bit of the song ends with an orchestra playing. It doesn't ruin the song though. A great finish. 9/10

Nice track by track Darkness Prevails. You raise a lot of questions that you can't answer though.
There was one thing you wrote which I think stood out. In relation to 'Give Me A Sign', you said you couldn't tell if it was a ballad or not. I think that's one of the main problems with this album. That song should be an out & out ballad, but it's sort of not, so I get what you are saying. Unfortunately, what that results in is too many songs on the album blending into each other.
I keep saying it in the comments to this review, but if ever an album NEEDED an acoustic ballad, it was this one.
