Right....here goes!
I just want to say......that I detest both Led zep and AC/DC. Fucking horrible bands in my opinion (blues/rock'n'roll was horrible in the 70s and it hasn't got any better since!).
What set GNR apart from rock'n'roll was their punk/metal hard rock hybrids, oh yeh, and their aggression of course!! Now, the 80s, what a golden era, and rather than an anomaly from that era, I consider gnr to be a handy addition.
I used to play gnr before rugby, and I can't describe the motivation and confidence I got from this record.
Before anyone starts slating this album, just remember how bad so much other music is.

same here, like I really enjoy the album and it is technically a classic, but there are better albums out there. Although within the genre I wouldn't say there were that many better albums.
And then I look at some of the songs:
Welcome To The Jungle
Paradise City
Sweet Child Of Mine
Nightrain
I'unno yet

A true life changing album. I received this "tape" in the mail in 1987 when I was 9 and I can not for the life of me understand why. My memory tells me that BMG sent it to me on accident but I can not be sure. However perhaps a greater power put it in my hands as it changed my life forever, a real turning point. Before listening to this album the Beatles had been the craziest thing I had ever listened too. (I grew up on a farm and we only got one radio station worth listening to and all they played was the "Rock and Roll Oldies Show") I took the album (tape) to my room and for weeks listened to it in secrecy with my ear glued against my tiny "boombox" in fear that the parenteral unit would hear their 9 year old listening to Axl sing about heroine, whores and destruction. After Slash melted my face off with his best work to date and Axls' incredible lyrics and vocals destroyed my innocence music became my life. Thus becoming in my opinion the greatest rock album of all-time.

This was the album that got me out of kiddy pop and into heavy music. And even after over 20 years it is still an amazing record, everything else they've put out pales in comparison to this. This Message Edited On 01.17.09
