From Scythe to Sceptre is one of the best songs the band has ever written.

yep. honestly, three of my favourite Be'lakor tracks are from their debut (opener, Tre'aste and Natural Apostasy) only Countless Skies may be better than those 3. this is their most consistent and has a more mature songwriting, but so many riffs and melodies on The Frail Tide are just incredible.

The band never stopped evolving. An Ember's Arc, Withering Strands or The Smoke of Many Fires from Vessels are even more mature songs.

"even more mature songs" hm idk, I'd say this is their pinnacle, they just focused more on the atmosphere than riffs on the new one. it's a great album, but not nearly as memorable as their older stuff imo.

Seventh Son is more mature than Powerslave, and I prefer Powerslave. The some goes for Promised Land and Operation: Mindcrime. A more mature songwriting doesn't necessarily have to be better, it's just a more adult approach, and I think a song like An Ember's Arc is a reflection of that.

I know that you weren't implying it's better just because it's more "mature", I just think it's not even more mature than this, it's simply a different approach. I personally think An Amber's Arc, while having 2-3 beautiful passages, has actually a rather poor flow in terms of transitions and such, for Be'lakor standards, making it more immature in a way. The Smoke of Many Fires on the other hand is just an all-around great song.

but yea, there are more awesome melodies and riffs in this one song than on the whole new album if you ask me

The riff in from Scythe to Scepter is one of my top 10 favorite melodeath riffs ever.

Cool song indeed, their debut is pretty solid. I find the new one far more interesting, but to each his own, obviously.

Never really got what the fuss was about with this. New album kills this.
