Anyone that likes this album should get "Snowfall on Judgment Day" by Redemption.

The album has tons of cheese on it, but it's Dream Theater, I've come to expect a little cheese...

I went to this album with low expectations thanks to their last few albums, but I found this to be pretty good. I really liked "A Nightmare to Remember" (did that middle sectionhave John P. playing guitar with an Andy Summers-ish tone? What the hell, am I going deaf?...), though "Wither" is pretty great, and for me, "The Count of Tuscany" takes it for the lyrics. That's probably the most ridiculous set of lyrics ever.

But I really wished they had a different lead singer... LaBrie is consistently a weak link for me.

P.S. Great review.

I disagree with the review because of two things. One, I don't consider Awake to be one of their best; it's one of the lesser Dream Theater albums along with Metropolis Part 2, Falling Into Infinity, and When Day and Dream Unite. Two, their longer songs have been really good since Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence.

Good review overall though. Great album. All of the songs except Wither are great in my opinion; I just can't get into Wither.

You do realize, though, that you're in the minority with that opinion. Yes, Awake's status as a top DT album is debatable, but Metropolis Pt 2 is pretty universally accepted as one of their best. I really liked the song "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulance" but haven't really appreciated the extended songs on the albums afterwards.

I agree that Metropolis Pt 2 is their best, but my favorite song by them remains 'Panic Attack'.

The one-two punch of Panic Attack and Never Enough are one of my favorite sections of any Dream Theater album.

For some reason I find it difficult to listen to an entire album of theirs. I bought their greatest hits album and it was pretty average.

But yeah, the time signature in Panic Attack is ridiculous.

I can see that. When I'm in the mood for Dream Theater I can generally fill that desire with a few songs and then move on to something else.

Their greatest hits album is trash.

It is impossible to summarize their catalog in one album.

The only reason to get the greatest hits album would be for the re-mixes and the B-side "To Live Forever"

Go buy one of their albums (Images And Words, Awake, SFAM)

This would be a good start as well.

I listened to Images And Words and was very underwhelmed, maybe I should give it another chance though.

Each DT album takes a few listens.

I liked it instantly.

I am a drummer though and Mike Portnoy's style pretty much got me into the band.

You will find about 85% of DT's hardcore fanbase are all musicians.

The songs I mainly throw on are "Panic Attack", "Never Enough", and "The Great Debate". Awake is the only album I listen to from start to finish anymore (except for "Lifting Shadows off a Dream" - that song sucks).

Yeah, I think I would have to say that "Panic Attack" is their best. The instrumentation, vocals, and lyrics are all fantastic on that song. It's just one of those genuinely good songs that I would add to a 'top 100 songs' list.

... and it's compact. They didn't try to force any extended interludes into it.

Lol, exactly! I should really read more reviews than I do, perhaps I could pick up on a writing style and emulate someone.

When I'm having issues picking a direction/format for a review I'll go back and re-read a few recent reviews I liked (by other people) and it usually kickstarts things.

Thanks for the advice. I suppose reading more reviews would be a good thing to do. The problem I tend to have is that while most reviews seem to flow well mine seem to be just a series of points.
