"mmm...i really touched a nerve there mitch, didn't i?
Maybe my heart doesn't flutter because it's a girl that's singing those words. I ain't no homo."
makes sense

Waior: you're a nice guy, but that is a rather ignorant statement. Opinions on this album range all the way from awful to classic. Do you really think everyone's opinion is right? What's the point of reviewing then, if it's just one of the many hundreds of people on this site spouting off their personal opinion about a given album?
At the end of the day, there has to be some objective standard for what is good music and what is bad music. You really can't deny that without being a tad irrational. If what you said is true, this site is basically rendered worthless.

i never realized that opinions could be incorrect.

"At the end of the day, there has to be some objective standard for what is good music and what is bad music."
wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong

InTheShallows: The reason this website works so well is probably because we all have relatively similar tastes. Opinions are opinions. They may not be good opinions (there are a few albums I simply can't imagine somebody rating above a 1, per se) but they are nonetheless (usually) legitimate and belong to the person.
You are right in a way though (yes, robertsona): there is an objective standard to what is good music and bad music in a slight way, but there is not an objective standard for what people can and can't enjoy.

Whoa, I look away for 10 minutes and look what happens! All music can be and is viewed freely, yes, but there is always music that will have a strong bias towards obviously bad or vice versa.

ok, you had me worried you were going off the deep end for a sec! But still, opinions can be wrong.

Album Rating: 3.5
the very definition of an opinion is that it can't be wrong
my opinion is that i think this is a good album and i enjoy listening to it. you can't tell me that i don't think that and that i don't enjoy listening to it.

"What is your favorite color?"
"Umm, blue!"
"Wrong. Your opinion is wrong."
I should listen to this record, actually.

what no
music is never objective in any, any way
people may agree on what is good music a LOt of the time but no it's not objective

by that standard (the "there is an objective opinion of what constitutes bad and good music") and the opinions of the vast majority of people on this site, all "mainstream" pop like this wouldn't even scrape a 3, when there's plenty of good, great, excellent, and so on pop in the world.

I think its kinda both in some ways. I think in terms of what people find as their favorite type of music or favorite album, its subjective. But there is a certain objective line between good and bad music within all genres.

No, good and bad music is ALL based on opinion. There is no music-o-meter that tells me what level of good the music that comes out of my speakers is. There is no mathematical algorithm that measures how good an artists songwriting is or isn't. If I enjoy listening to Brokencyde, then by all means, it's good to me, and I'm not going to let anyone tell me otherwise.

yeah ziroth pretty much summed up my thoughts on this, and coincidentally why i don't think people should write reviews with
different ratings than they give albums

There is no mathematical algorithm that measures how good an artists songwriting is or isn't.
melody, rhythm, dynamics, timbre, texture, tempo, all these things dictate how good songwriting can be. Some artists use these things better then others. It's like saying that all food is perspective, even though its pretty obvious that some people cook food better then others. The same applies to music.

food is perspective though
i would rather eat buffalo wild wings than a lot of the shit i see on fancy cooking shows

music is subjective what the fuck are you all even
you all meaning chewie
|

There are bands that use all of those things in greater quantity/quality then others. There are technical abilities at work in terms of playing instruments or writing interesting/complex/emotional songs that some bands can ultimately do better, because they use the afformentioned things to greater effect.
