The debut is where they were still finding their sound, it’s good but not a starting point imo. Here is an obvious starting point if you like early 2000s post-hardcore, but their 2011 album No Devolución is an equally good starting point if you like moody, atmospheric, post punk infused stuff. Id say check both and work forwards or backwards based on what you liked!

Damn this is goood. Understanding in a Car Crash and Autobiography of a Nation are insanely good. Some of it sounds kinda samey and Whiney/cringe, but very good album nonetheless.

And thanks! I took your advice and decided to start with this one — then I’ll go chronologically and check the debut at the end.

I can totally get some of it sounding samey/whiney, it definitely sounds "of its time", but I'm glad you can see the greatness in it too!

If its time, exactly. Similar to listening to nu Metal now in a way. But I still love this album, the energy and passion are insane.

Yeah, it's totally a product of its time, I think. That hardcore/emo scene. I can still enjoy most of this album, but some songs I feel embarrassed listening to. That screaming at the end of Cross Out The Eyes? I have to skip it now. Between this and War All The Time, they made a huge jump in song writing maturity IMO.
Still, very important album to me from my youth, and I suspect it was influential to a lot of bands.

Because I'm too lazy to check any live videos, and I'm not sure if they would give me my answer anyway, does anyone know if their keyboardist performs when they do the songs from this album live?

I ignore keyboard players so idk

The screaming at the end of cross out is one of my least fav parts of this I do agree but it's still CLASSIC

His voice is high as fuck, of course some of it will sound whiney.

The sense of urgency they have throughout this album is second to none.

i need more stuff like this. this and saosin are so good

Not a lot out there like this unforch. IIRC you already listened to early AoF too so even less left to explore.
|
| |
yeah i like their debut a lot. thats what i thought, a lot of similar-ish stuff doesn't hold a candle to this so it's too bad

At The Drive-in's "Relationship of Command" was recommended to me when I was super into this record, and I thought it was a pretty good rec at that point. They follow some pretty similar writing styles and aesthetics.
