This isn't the best album I've ever heard but it's not terrible.

Do you have any idea what metalcore is?

Their first two albums were metalcore. This is actually more of a classic metal album in the vein of mid-career Judas Priest. Do not argue this point with me, because you will lose.
City of Evil =/= metalcore
Furthermore, you speak as if they had any albums between Waking the Fallen and City of Evil.
It sounds to me like you're just pissed off that M Shadows isn't squawking like a pterydactyl anymore. It honestly is a change for the best. His vocals on the first two albums were downright terrible. He had no idea what the hell he was doing and it was obvious to anyone who has even a shred of knowledge about singing. This Message Edited On 05.10.06

So the vocals on this CD aren't terrible? I'll answer for you: they definitely are.
Why would anyone relate this to not just JP, but classic metal? NEVER do that; that is awful. You might want to compare this to...uh, metalcore. Or dog crap.
Was this juvenille display supposed to impress me? You're gonna have to do a better job of back up your argument than that, because a simple "they suck" just doesn't cut it.This Message Edited On 05.10.06

First off Mudvaynian, don't argue with Steerpike you will loose. Second, this is more
comparable to mid carrer JP than say metalcore. CoE isn't metalcore thirdly, you can't
honestly say that A Dozen Furies sounds the same and City Of Evil.

I'm not saying it is metalcore, but I can't see how it isn't comparable to it. To classic metal? No.
The question is, why not?
The vocals are much more melodic than in an archetypal metalcore band. As are the guitars. They make frequent use of harmonized guitar solos a la Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. The vocals are also heavily harmonized. The production is much more polished than most metalcore. The songwriting is much more reminiscent of classic metal as well, with each song exceeding at least 5 minutes, and multiple sections each with a different vocal melody.
Overall, City of Evil is more in line with the conventions of hard rock/classic metal than metalcore. Avenged Sevenfold have greatly distanced themselves from their original albums.
I'm just getting very tired of everyone slagging the band off as metalcore, or otherwise classifying the album incorrectly. It should be pretty transparent, but for some reason a lot of people insist on ignoring all the evidence and arguments put forward. This Message Edited On 05.10.06

Steerpike, have you picked up CoE yet?

No, but I have half the album on my computer. I'm waiting until I have a paycheck.

What the hell is metalcore?

Basically, it's just hardcore punk that borrowed a few elements from metal. Not enough to still be labelled as regular hardcore, but not enough to really be called metal either.

I could send you the other half if you'd like, unless you don't like the whole pirating thing. In which case I understand.

I have no problem with pirating songs to sample a band. But if I like what I hear, I prefer to buy the albums to give the band my support.

That's cool, I'm kinda the same. But usually I get most of the album, or the whole album then if I like it I'll buy it, I usually don't just buy random albums. Actually it's kinda funny, I never do that but I took a chance buying both this and Waking the Fallen when I was at Media Play remembering a post Shattered_Future made asking for a sampler of it, I don't know why I remembered that but I saw it and I decided to pick up. It's now one of my favorite albums of all time.

THIS ALBUM WAS PRETTY SWEET. MY FAVORITE SONG WAS "BEAST AND THE HARLOT" THE REV AND HIS DRUMS WERE REALLY SWEET IN THAT SONG WITH THE DOUBLE BASS KICKING IT OFF.

Probably said/asked before but:
Do you suppose they stole the title for the song Bat Country from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas?
"We can't stop here! This is bat country!"
|
| |
The song is supposedly about their "Hunter S. Thompson-like experiences", so it would make sense.

Thought there was a connection...

There's tons of HST-Fear and Loathing references in Bat Country. Like "Too weird to live but much to rare to die" and talking about going on acid trips.
