Souvenirs > everything The Gathering and most things generally
better?

there are two kinds of people in the world: wise wholesome souls, and those who think Mandlylion is better than Souvenirs

Much better. This was exactly what I was missing Demon and Johnny ✨💪🏼

LOL I guess some people like TG's metal stuff more than the rest, so the further the album got away from it, the lower said album ranks. Very subjective. It's nothing personal 🤣🤣
I think that's why NB is so good and my personal favorite. It may have gotten their formula just right, with their inventiveness, experiments, atmospheric metal and, of course, Queen Anneke reigning supreme.
But these lists are ever changing. Today I'd probably put if_then_else above Mandylion lol. That being said, I don't see my top 4 going beyond the ones I mentioned.

But you guys sure make a good case for someone to revisit and listen more closely to Souvenirs, Home and Disclosure. I'll get right on that.

Niiiice! You're absolutely right, of course it all depends on taste. Yet I felt the convo was very unfairly weighted against Souvenirs, which would paint a wrong picture for all those non-user visitors who are reading along.
Those millions of people we're influencing on a daily basis with our banter.

Demon your The Gathering awakening is my fave thing on Sput of the last couple of years. It fills me with joy.
And you're right. This indeed is excellent. It's Anneke The Gathering after all.

I like the slightly quirkier tangents on here, sticks to ‘mostly’ TG’s modus operandi yet deviates enough to keep things interesting (without descending into clumsiness / ill-advised experimentation) .
…to be fair, that could be a description of their entire discog in a microcosm, at least the Anneke era.
This one has now separated itself into a niche that I NEED, could see me throwing it on specifically, rather than ‘I just want TG, let’s throw something on that isn’t ‘Souvenirs / Planet / Nighttime / Mandy’. It’s a good feeling. Thanks for the support!

Their first two, The West Pole and Beautiful Distortion are now their only sub-excellent releases. Providing Home & Disclosure hold up.

Album Rating: 4.5
There is all reason to expect those two to hold up just fine. Home is a personal fave of mine and Disclosure showed that Anneke-less TG could still make a 4.5 worthy record. Contains some superb moments (Meltdown, Heroes for Ghosts, I Can See Four Miles for instance).

Omg art with all these bumps! Is it in celebration of Ocean's return? If so: hi Ocean!!!

No, I've just been in a Gathering mood, this happens usually around this time of year. Welcome back to Ocean though!!

This one's really really nice. Ok it's not How To Measure A Planet, which no words can describe, but the songs are just fine, the band is great and Anneke is fantastic as always.
I rarely see Colorado Incident mentionned but it really is a neckbreaking stoner anthem to me.

Bad Movie Scene into Colorado Incident used to be a major highlight for me. Both great tracks

I much preffer this to HTMaP. Even the instrumentals, which arent that great, are more pleasant to my ears than the likes of Big Sleep, Marooned, Liberty Bell or South American...

Dear Dreamflight we could definitely argue on this song from If-Then-Else that is better than this other one from HTMAP.
But there's a whole general atmosphere on HTMAP, that isn't there on If-Then-Else although it contains brilliant tracks like Rollercoaster, Shot To Pieces, Herbal Movement...
