I've quoted this before somewhere else on the site but whatever, it's perfect for this.
"Thus far I too should agree with the many, that the excellence of music is to be measured by pleasure. But the pleasure must not be that of chance persons; the fairest music is that which delights the best and best educated, and especially that which delights the one man who is pre-eminent in virtue and education. And therefore the judges must be men of character, for they will require both wisdom and courage."
- Plato, "Laws"

this gets alot of hate in classical music circles, but alot of those people can get pretty stuffy these days...

To be honest, the rest of Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione is (moderately) better than this.

Fucking remarkable piece of music, the melodies here are absolutely iconic. Very possibly the greatest composition of the Baroque era.

I really like the way this review is described in terms of the seasons. Will be listening to this on my after-work walk.

Also, the above Plato quote is stupid, in my opinion. Another example of the ridiculous opinions of an antiquated society. Basically saying that music should be judged only by the pleasure it gives the listener, but not if that listener is lower-class as they're lesser humans. They don't understand pleasure, nor could they possibly understand such a refined thing, reserved only for the 'trve'.

"seriously though, after studying classical music it's hard to rate it on here. because if Welcome to Hell gets a 4.5, even the unremarkable compositions of Mahler or Vivaldi are orders of magnitude more accomplished on both a craft and artistic level, so what does something like this get?"
