sort of interested how this seems at least to me to go "deeper" than Loveless. which is to say that for all its brilliance (I mean, I guess I think it's "overrated" all told but who cares), Loveless TO ME seems like songs that could be described as conventional or even poppy but played with a really unique sort of "filter" of noise/shoegaze stuff ("to here knows when" the possible exception), to me the very "noise" and unique sound of this album is sort of encoded into the songs themselves and their structures, like in "no more sorry" or "all i need" etc.
does that make sense to anyone? "lose my breath" is an absolute masterpiece, also love the aforementioned other two and the closer. great album, really underrated it before

pretty interesting and I kinda agree, to me in this record there is something like a post-punk freedom of approach in the songwriting where they went straight for the moods and feels resulting in thiner, more aired out songs whereas Loveless focuses on the structures of its songs first to then deliver something with more of a strong backbone of intoxicating catchiness

robertsona: I don't have a long history with Loveless like most, having just heard it a couple days ago (I'll likely be scolded for putting things in certain terms at this point in time), but from the two listens I've had so far, I'd have to agree with you. Loveless is, aesthetically, a very unique album to say the least, but it's not the My Bloody Valentine I fell in love with, and its sound is certainly more conventional and thus accessible.
I feel like the music here is more abstract and powerfully evocative (I realize the latter is more subjective). The really cool thing about it (to me) is that they unintentionally created shoegaze with this. Just pure creation for the fun of it, as opposed to trying to codify a nonexistent approach to a sound. Songs like 'No More Sorry' are very frail, vulnerable moments in their discography - something very Dead-Can-Dance or Cocteau Twins-like on the surface, but yielding its own aesthetic identity. I never felt the same sense of depth on Loveless. Don't get me wrong -that album sounds like a million bucks, whereas this is very raw, gritty, their control constantly slipping away (gladly so, though, it seems). It's more of a risk-taker, more in-step with reality in its lyrical themes and musical presentation. It twists and mutates as it goes, and is still to this day (in my opinion), its own thing entirely. (That album title rings especially true today when you really think about it).
Sorry that was such a long response, I really enjoy discussing this album.

I would also put Loveless last, although it's an excellent record. I feel like m b v deserves more love
