"this was the biggest fall from a 5.0 rating I've ever experienced lol"
Yeah man- I keep this at a 5 due to nostalgia and it does still rule overall, but the few times I've listened in recent years agreed it does not have the punch it once did.

"Am I missing something here? This just sounds like Black Album/Load Metallica if they shopped at Hot Topic and went to a liberal arts school"
still the most strangely accurate description ever

I don't love this album for its punch... I love it for how well crafted it is. The songs, arrangements and production are just so consistently well done.
It's as close as PL ever got to perfection.

Ocean of Noise gets it.

Does this band even have an "electronic era" outside of Host?

Kind of. One Second had a lot of electronics.

Looking at their discography, I would consider 'One Second' through the 'Self Titled' as the electronic-influenced era.

I think they have a solid discography throughout - bar the debut.

it's not really an electronics phase
it's more their Depeche Mode period

Agreed.

I can see that being a more accurate description. It's hard to hear 'Host' and think of any other band besides Depeche Mode.

The debut's good though.

I don't like it. Especially when you consider other doom debuts that came out around the same time, like My Dying Bride and Anathema. Paradise Lost's was definitely the bottom of those three.

Around the same time? Dude, OK, they both came out in the early '90s but Lost Paradise predates both of the other bands' debuts by a good 2 or three years. On top of that, it has loads of awesome riffs and notable moments while still managing to create a sinister atmosphere.

Yeah the sinister atmosphere is delicious in the debut, as cliché of an expression as it is it really sounds like a haunted cathedral. It also did the "beauty and the beast" vox thing before Gothic even though people always give credit to Gothic for that.

Ha ha. So maybe my memory was a little hazy on the actual dates. My first introduction to doom was Anathema's debut, and then I bought My Dying Bride's "Turn Loose The Swans" album and Paradise Lost's "Icon". Those were the only three albums I played for weeks. It's probably also why I don't really like MDB's pre-Turn Loose the Swans stuff or Paradise Lost's pre-Icon stuff... because I started with their classics.

I just revisited this one after like 10 years.and wow! It aged better than I expected. Unlike the review stated, I think the variety of moods and tempo is what impresses me most. Seeing how difficult it can be to do Gothic metal in a not samey way... Excellent album and by far the best in a somewhat up and down discography for me
