For me its one those albums that so horribly dated its hard to listen to, but every time i do i end up enjoying it quite a bit

dated is such a weird qualifier for 80s black metal. i mean. the whole appeal is that it sounds dated

Certainly in the minority on this one, but I sincerely don't understand why Blood Fire Death is regarded as markedly superior to this. I find there's far more conceptual focus, stronger dynamics, bolstered production values, stronger atmosphere, and a more soulful and cultural character (incorporation of extensive ambiance and male choirs being a clear instantiate). Blood Fire Death is superb, and contains some of Quorthon's career highlights, but several of the tracks were relatively by-the-numbers Black/Thrash numbers that filled out the album. Not by any measure poor, I just find this record far more focused and inspired - Though nothing on this record out-performs A Fine Day To Die. This record certainly feels more heartfelt.

BFD is superior to this because it's got more black metal
Can see why some would prefer this though

Meh, I don't superimpose stylistic expectations on albums. If I take both on their own terms, they're both outstanding, I just find this far more wholesome and heartfelt. BFD is definitely Quorthon's finest more Black inclined record though, to be sure. :3

BFD and Under the Sign are better but this still rips.

nah nemeton is 100% right. a fine day to die is the best bathory track, but BFD has this filler issue going on. every second of hammerheart is super inspired and exciting
and honestly song to hall up high/home of once brave might be maybe > a fine day to die, maybe.

UTS, BFD, and Hammer are one of the finest runs in the genre's eclectic history. Hammerheart is an excellent balance in consistency and highpoints, and is simply larger in scope and ethos. Fanboy that I am for this record, I wouldn't quite say "every second" of the album is amazing, though certainly deeply inspired; Baptized In Fire and Ice doesn't stand up to the other tracks, but is far from terrible. Show me a record that is equally qualitative, cover to cover. Good bloody luck. BFD has incredible high points, but is less consistent and more primitive in approach. Normally I like stripped down approaches to Metal, but Hammerheart is a superlative variety of soulful, so in this case, less is not more (for me, obviously). More traditional Black Metal fans will obviously prefer UTS and BFD, and there are perfectly good arguments in that favour. I'm a fan of the more culturally inspired side of Black Metal, so it's only natural I prefer Hammerheart.

Song To Hall Up High/Home Of The Once Brave is the first piece I ever heard from Bathory. I was 16 and, at the time - even with a pretty good musical frame of reference - I thought it was one of the most remarkable things I'd ever heard

i think the iron maiden debut and the roxy music debut are as consistent as hammerheart (:

BFD is best bathory but I love this one too

Not familiar with Roxy, but make a track or two of the Maiden debut b-sides, and I'd agree. I don't think the Maiden's debut matches the scope and character of this record, though a couple of Maiden's later albums certainly do :3

Di'Anno Maiden is the best Maiden, agreed.
@Nemeton: check Moonsorrow - Hävitetty. Heavily inspired by viking-era Bathory, you might like it.

Cheers, Alastor! Verisakeet is one of my all time favourite albums, and Moonsorrow's finest, to my tastes :3
