Birth Pains has the best solo in Toby's entire discography.

"The Ferryman / Marid's" is the best track if combined together. Alone, the opener still stands.

They Aren't All Beautiful, Heaven and Weak, and Birth Pains are all way better than the opener tbh but yeah every track here is classic in its own right.

idk I just love the idea of starting a metal album with an 8 minute long instrumental. It works so perfectly here.

It's perfect yeah, but when it comes to Maudlin openers I definitely prefer Stones of October's Sobbings to Blue Ghost. Both still rule though, no doubt.

Yea, not a metal album, but when they play metal on here, holy shit do they play it.

TBH this definitely comes off as more of a jazz fusion progmetal album to me with more emphasis on jazz than metal.

i imagine he's the kind of guy who cringes at hearing any of his projects get associated with any genre

But the vibes don't mean that this is jazz, however.

Although calling this metal feels like a stretch too, idk
