I think of The National as the melancholy of Radiohead without the sonic lushness, experimentation or masterful delivery that validates that melancholy
this is what i'm talking about

radiohead sounds nothing like this band

^[2] dumb comparison tbh

exactly

wasn't a comparison I came up with, was one multiple people have made to me when recommending this band
my quote that you pasted in bold above actually expresses more dissimilarities between the bands than similarities

"no attack to drive home the emotion"
WHAT
|
| |
I need some degree of vigour from the musician to make the song seem passionate yes, a sense of them overflowing with emotion
see: Bjork, Jeff Mangum, Avey Tare, Joanna Newsom, David Bowie

friend of mine, also. alligator definitely has his least "monotone" performance out of all their stuff, poly, if thats what youre looking for.
|
| |
okay sounds like he had a cup of coffee before recording Pink Rabbits, this song is actually pretty nice
much prefer this style of soundscape to the lo-fi, over-earnest jangle of songs like Geese of Beverly Road
@climactic will give Alligator a crack :]
