"I was being hyperbolic : ) but I also don't think these are nitpicks there are lots and lots of differences. putting them on top of each other like one would a blueprint is obtuse I think. but live your life"
And I think you're being obtuse to disregard the similarities and diminish my argument to saying they are identical. Thats like me pretending you guys are saying that they have ZERO similarities. Plus I've been speaking on trif's comments who literally admitted to nitpicks to begin with, not yours.

Mezzanine > Endtroducing > Dummy
put some respect on Endtro, it's the highest rated on sputnik among these three for a reason
|

Something about the idea of Endtroducing - a plunderphonics record - accompanying Dummy and Mezz, which completely transcended the limitations of being rooted in sample based music, as the third in the trip hop trifecta feels super reductive to me

"put some respect on Endtro, it's the highest rated on sputnik among these three for a reason"
Sputnik averages are not a good or convincing source for objectivity lmao
I have endtro 5'd as well but within the discussion of trip hop and adjacent stuff it wouldn't break my top 20

It almost feels more appropriate to talk about Endtroducing in in the context of stuff on the spectrum from Since I Left You to Donuts
But this era of Trip Hop for me is heavily defined by the addition of live instrumentation and performances to the sampling process. Like the whole "band" aspect of second wave Trip Hop is like the coolest part about it.

Endtroducing is at least better than maxinquaye

"Almost as if you could apply some of the same logic to mezz and dummy. But I hath fear for my digital rep so I will not pursue beyond this pithy comment. Admittedly Endtro is VERY different from those 2, and not just different"
As a silly little comparison, if dummy mezz and Endtroducing were Radiohead albums
To me Dummy and Mezz would be kid a and amnesiac. Equally brilliant, perfect counterparts, fulfill a specific vibe that no one else will ever master
And endtro would be like... ok comp

"Endtroducing is at least better than maxinquaye"
Yes, but if it was simply about "what is the next best", rather than "what fits the criteria the best" endtro would still be eliminated for me
If it was "what is the next best" my number 1 contender would probably be Lamb s/t

We are all Radiohead fans here, it's the one band we can (almost) all agree is good (even tho not a single pair of us agree on a ranking)

oh word that makes a stupid amount of sense lol
"would probably be Lamb s/t"
lamb s/t is full of absolute amazing cuts but for me it somehow doesn't have that surreal, unquestionable vibe that lightning was struck and magic was put into these grooves. unkle suffers from it too. endtroducing and maxinquaye have it for me so they're the more logical part of that trifecta. even still, maxinquaye is worse then everything else mentioned so far lol

people complained so much about Pink Floyd winning the Sput Royale but Radiohead winning would have been a lot worse

ah ok, I felt like you guys were saying that Endtro's garbage compared to these two
but I understand, endtro has parts that feel very put-together, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but Dummy, and Mezzanine especially, feel like they're one sonic cloth

"Dummy is GOAT, and Port s/t is underrated even though it is nearly universally critically acclaimed. Hard to get out of that Dummy shadow. The way they used sampling of "real" instruments to create tunes and textures is inimitable."
Very hard agree, normaloctagon I think I love you!!!!
And let's do that Pots, agreeing to disagree is ok!

Lamb s/t needs more love, one of my faves. It’s a nice feeling whenever it gets mentioned.
Not sure I can ever love these guys as much as Portishead, but as alluded to many times they do serve different purposes despite the similarities. As interesting as this is as an ‘artistic piece‘ (yes... “wanker”) I just vibe with Portishead’s noir soul/jazz aesthetic so much more, the atmosphere is unparalleled - then when you add Beth’s voice it’s all over.

I know! Totally! There is no winning for that third addition because the one that makes the most sense is the worst and the ones that are the best dont make sense lmao.
