Depends on so much tho. None of their albums sound the same.

True. But seeing as teamster's a big prog metal fan, I would definitely direct him to this one or The Stage first

I had my second random encounter with someone in the wild who despises this record. Bought the CD and the guy at check out went on at length about how lame it is that they changed.
This is my favorite A7X album, outright.

I remain firm with my sentiment from this review: this record will be fondly looked at in a decade’s time.

I mean on the surface I get it. Some people want a band to stay in a particular lane and deliver the same feeling over and over. For instance, Yellowcard is my favorite band and I never liked it quite as much when they experimented or moved away from their summery pop-punk. I guess the difference is that I still respected it and found plenty to like about it, even if it deviated from my personal preferences.
The few random conversations with non-Sputnikers that I've had about this album have all been extremely negative and dismissive, as if it's very black and white that they suck now or something. It's just odd to me.

It’s really just insane to me that those same people like the self titled.
Like guys, this is literally just the better version of that. Actual experimentation with their sound, not the half assed bullshit that they pulled on so many of the songs on that record.

And I’ve said it before, but Game Over, Mattel, Cosmic, and Beautiful Morning would’ve sounded at home on any number of their other records. There’s still a lot to like here even if you don’t like Nobody or the GOD tracks

Yeah, the detractors are really overstating how "out there" this album is. Despite the experimentation it has, it still sounds like an Avenged album at the end of the day. If anything, it's a completely logical followup to The Stage
Unfortunately, there are always going to be diehard old-school fans who will say everything after the Rev's death is just flat-out shit

the copium in the comments on this post tastes so so sweet
i'd be willing to bet a7x is the most "out there" thing the majority of a7x's fanbase listens to

^ The one that got me was this:
"They will come back around. Metallica did. Avenged is too young to become a nostalgia act and live off its first few albums. Let them try new things. Once they are no longer fulfilled by it, they will look back introspectively and look at the earlier stuff much more fondly"
What a condescending take, lol

I fucking hate when people say stuff like "oh, you'll grow out of it eventually" or "just give it time, you'll come around to my/our side". Like, how the hell do you know?

lol grow out of it eventually. Yeah the guys in their 40’s are going to grow out of the most mature record they’ve ever made

Waiting for that sweet spot when the bandmates are all in their 60s and they start a nostalgia tour

I will say, polarizing records like these are definitely the most entertaining ones to discuss. That's probably why the Fear Inoculum thread is so big

Bumped from a 3.5 to a 4.
Listened to this more than The Stage, and I loved that record.
My favourite is still Waking The Fallen, but this doesn't seem as "weird" as I've seen people make it out to be. The band have plenty of typical A7X fare in their back catalogue, they needed to make something like this to keep things unpredictable.
Seems to be a genuine Marmite album, love it or hate it, but this certainly isn't boring.

FI, bar the t/t, is a near masterpiece, and I’ll fight anyone to the death who says otherwise. Lol
