The song literally sounds like an extension of Great Mass of Color.

nvm it's great and the cleans are way better! It's mostly harsh vox tho so that's also great

That's a good way of putting it. Has that low soft tone GMoC does but feels way more fleshed out and actually building to something. Its pretty good.

New song is MUAH. Perfect mixture of Sunbather and this. I prob love this album too much, but can’t help it tbh. ANYWAY the new single seems like a perfect move from this. Though, I am curious as to if the new album will have its own identity. Roads to Judah is Roads to Judah. Sunbather is its own thing. New Bermuda is its own thing. OCHL is its own thing, as messy as it was, and so on… Wonder if this one will have its own sound or will it borrow from others? Doesn’t make me any less hype since these two new singles sound absolutely amazing. It’s like Magnolia perfected Black Brick and Heathen perfected something like Villain for instance or GMoC. Either way, I am hype and expect it to land amongst my favs of the year.

Also I will say that they are amongst my favorite bands of modern time and one of those bands I’m constantly intrigued with. Sunbather is possibly my favorite album ever. This one isn’t quite as good but it’s definitely my second favorite of theirs. The other albums I really liked when I first heard but have worn off in years since. Like I’m not extremely crazy about New Bermuda and especially OCHL. But I do find them intriguing nonetheless. But yeah those last two albums I had highly rated and have lowered ever since release. Sunbather and IG have stayed high for me. I know this one gets a bad rap but I think Shelter is quite possibly Alcest’s best and everyone hates that one too.

New song is absolutely fantastic and it scratches that Mombasa itch that I've had since IG came out. This new album is shaping up to be one of their best.

The build to unleashing the blastbeats is such an elegant touch

They've done better in finding a way to blend gaze and BM without dedicating 10-12 minutes establishing each one. Everything Canary Yellow does, for example, is done (better) by Heathen in 5 minutes. Efficient fucking blackgaze.

Well color me surprised, I really thought they were gonna leave the cleans behind on this new record. Glad they haven't abandoned those Infinite Granite vibes. Heathen is stunning
Absolute madmen are really gonna blend the best of both worlds, god I love this band. New album can't come quick enough.

"Just listened through this again today and I still love this album. Really hoping they lift some of what they did here and effectively merge it with their heavier sound. Could make a really cool diverse album."
So stoked they listened to me. LETS FUCKING GO BOYS

I don’t mind the meandering. I find that part of their flair. But I do understand what you’re saying in how the new song does what their longer tracks do in 5 minutes. But I’m cool with bite size Deafheaven songs. That’s kinda what I assume this is based on the number of tracks. They’ve never had this many in a single album before.

My only critique of the new song is that it does a really good job building up to the blast beats, but then afterwards it kind of dulls out a little bit to close the song. Otherwise, the song is fantastic.

People call the last half the best part but I guess as someone who loved IG to the point I do, I much prefer the first half. Those instrumentals with the improved cleans are like a fuzzy blanket and pillow. Love the spoken section too. Transitioning into the screams is great though and no jarring. Love the drums too. No complaints from my end but I do prefer the first half but I’m prob only one

The first half leading up to and including the blast beats really makes the song. Imo, Deafheaven has somewhat of a reputation of kicking off and fleshing out their songs really well, but then falling a bit flat when it comes to closing out their songs. This mainly applies to NB and OCHL though, also to IG but not to the same extent. The song 'Glint' is the perfect example of this formula, starting out with great ideas and fleshing out to an even better idea of a climax, but then running out of ideas to close the song out properly. One of the key strengths of Sunbather, to me, was not having any moments from start to finish where an idea felt flat.
