QOTSA are usually not really my bag. But this is pretty different from their earlier stuff. I don't think they do Stoner Rock all that well, but this is all rock and almost no stoner. And imo they do that way better.

I always thought the whole point of Homme forming this band was to move away from the stoner cul de sac and into mainstream rock.

This is as far away as he has gotten from his stoner roots though agreed, and this album saved the band for me. It's my second favourite after Songs for the Deaf

But the prominetly stoner-tinged alt rock sound on older records is also what draws me a lot to the band.

I came to the band from Kyuss so obviously I liked the stoner rock sound but I was never upset about losing Kyuss as I instantly got what Homme was up to and why he had to move on for the sake of his ambition. The Kyuss approach would have got stale very quick.

Definitely. Debut is a very fun record, but a whole discog of that wouldn't have worked.

Yeah you could pretty much tell that Kyuss was going stale from just listening to ATCLT

Also QOTSA's debut is solid but it's really just one song divided up lol

Kyuss are preserved as one of the greatest cult acts of all time and Homme is trying his best to keep it that way despite Garcia and friends kinda understandably wanting to play those old songs and make a little more money off that name

I think it's possibly their second best album, behind SFTD

I'm among the few that like Lullabies slightly more than Rated R, both being behind this and SFTD.

Indeed, that game opened up many bands that I jam to this date or finally got to explore more thoroughly the past months (like Killing Joke and Ministry).
