'We were swamped with American Rock which was obviously fucking amazing but Oasis, Blur, Supergrass, Pulp, were such a breath of fresh air and were ours. Common People was the song of the 90s.'
I didn't feel like we were lacking in Brit rock bands as you had the Wildhearts, Manics, Therapy?, Terrorvision (lol)...then Paradise Lost, Radiohead, Placebo and, er, Feeder. Plus you had the electronic and trip hop stuff which was almost all English.
I don't think I needed something that sounded like Brit pop - as a kid it sounded a bit antiquated to me, Oasis a bit like the Beatles, Blur a bit cockey sparra, Pulp a bloodless clever clever nerd in specs. Stuff like Ocean Colour Scene, Primal Scream and The Verve just really turned me off back then. Randomly I really liked the Black Grape album so some stuff just appealed for whatever reason.
I sort of got close to getting into Stereophonics (gulp) and Supergrass, then a bit into Blur - but more when the height of Brit pop was over and they were moving back into rock.
Asked what the songs of the 90s were after getting the other side of them in 2000 I'd probably have said Smells Like Teen Spirit and Paranoid Android.

Other than Oasis I find Britpop a little drab to be honest. Blur have a few great songs but they don't capture my imagination and i'm not a fan of Pulp at all.

Oasis were a 'proper rock n' roll band' - I can't deny that.
The rest were student-y and more 'cerebral' and/or witty I guess, with a keen sense of heritage and inherent nostalgia. They didn't rock is what I'm trying to say.

Liking that top 25 of 94' list, will check the ones I haven't heard.
90's are easily my favourite decade of music.

Looking back at the 90s as a decade certainly in the UK they were the last remnants of the 70s. Massive pub drinking culture, big blocks of flats on estates yet to be knocked down, still very much conservative way of thinking, football wasn’t overrun by foreigners. Services in general were absolute fucking shit. Music was amazing.
I’d go back in a blink of an eye tbh.

I think I'd be ten times as popular here with the taste I had as a teenager...which makes sense

Goddamn, A Warm Place does things to me. It takes me places (true to its title). It is perhaps the most beautiful, ethereal and haunting piece of music I’ve ever heard.

This hurts
The uk had trip hop, post-rock and shoegaze but is blairist Beatles that is refreshing.

I've tried so hard to love this album, but the style just doesn't click with me. I find myself going back to Pretty Hate Machine way more. I'm still giving this a 4 though because I realize how important of a land mark this album is. Very experimental and you can clearly see the influence it had.
