in a way I get how he feels. compared to Panopticon, it's less like "Isis - Wavering Radiant" and more like "Turner, Caxide, Harris, Meyer, and Gallagher - Wavering Radiant".

What do you mean? Like the other band members took over the musical direction and songwriting duties on Absence and this?

when it came out, to me it felt like the sum of its creative parts than a holistic entity. since I'm familiar with Gallagher's other bands his guitar style kinda sticks out to me like Mustard Gas & Roses popped out during an Isis song. it does feel like everyone else had a bit more say in the mix since Turner returned with heavier shit.

turner is a fantastic front man and I like his first two sumac records (third one I found boring), but all members of isis are essential. it's unfortunate that what he had in mind with the band wasn't in accord with what the others wanted. they were certainly going in a more melodic and progressive direction, which I love. wavering radiant and absence are brilliant albums.

yea but without Turner's edge to the band they sounded limp
i.e. Palms

He was a good team player. Bandmates had a lot of say in the musical direction and it didn't end up with the sound he had in mind but he rolled with it.

I just got sad reading that. Good on him for drawing the line though, you can really hear how much he's invested in sumac

Second and third Sumac are the best ones though...

"i.e. Palms"
true but then again i don't think chino had good chemistry with them. he also wrote most of gore and look how that turned out as well.

Palms and Gore are both excellent aside from the awful production on both. Whoever was in charge of that part should be fired.
I'm really glad about how Absence and this turned out. Sumac doesn't do it for me and I prefer this later era of Isis the most, so I guess I'm more into the other band members' ideas.

I’m on board with Talon 100%. I feel like their is more mysticism in the last two albums + Palms. I love it.

Okay I kind of love this, which is somewhat surprising. Easily the most immediately gratifying ISIS release and it appears to be a quite an obvious step up after Absence.

Yeah this is definitely the ISIS album people should start with.

I don’t know about that, depends on your former experiences I suppose. 33 year old me certainly found this easier to digest than Panopticon at 18, but I’m a vastly different person now.

Yeah my statement was overly sweeping. Sometimes you gotta throw caution to the wind and just assert stuff!

I agree with this being the more accessible album, mostly because it has a lot more melodies and high production values

I fell in love with Oceanic and Panopticon first and circled around to this and Absence several months later. The video for Holy Tears was my first overall taste, though.

When this originally came out I quickly dismissed it as a retread of things they had done better. Fuck was I wrong.
