This is just their most accessible. Personally it's my favorite just because I prefer the ratio of DM to prog and synth here versus the other records. They are immensely talented regardless.

Maybe I'm in the minority buy I think this album has their best DM parts too out of all their albums.

Nah, I do too. I love the shit out of Starspawn and HH but this is just their most mature album by a mile. HH had a shot but to this day it feels underdeveloped to me. I readily admit I was never much of a pure DM guy so I get why some could be disappointed by this, but I've always felt heavy shit hits harder when there's stuff on the other end of the spectrum used responsibly as well.

Heavy agree. I can't do death metal that's just straight riffs and aggression for 40-50 minutes. Songs need opportunities to breathe, to create space. This album has a great atmosphere. Like, Inner Paths from HH ended up being my favorite song on the album because I loved the ambient + DM approach. It's why Absolute Elsewhere rocks so hard.

This definitely isn't a typical DMers DM album, more of a prog nerds DM album (and there's nothing wrong with that!... kinda)

then you have mad sods who like both... pick a side, cowards!

"more of a prog nerds DM album"

which even then has its limits because there is a lot of variation in prog which can, like DM, be exhausting at times (*cough* BTBAM *cough*)

I re-jammed Hidden history recently and it was still really blurry tbh, nothing really stood out for me. So I was very surprised at how much I ended up enjoying this. I also like Starspawn a lot but HH is definitely their weakest record imo.

Been jamming Hidden History a lot this month. I actually think its their best. The riffs on that album >>> this. less dynamic though

Hidden History is third for me out of their three LPs, but it's still an easy 4.7 lmao.

I’m still really conflicted here. Like I’ve said their live show is fuckin stupid good but no matter how much I jam this I still never really get that feeling I had when I saw them live

Considering how tight they are plus the extra benefit of hearing their live sound mixing, I can imagine you'd be a little disappointed coming back to the studio version. Missing a bit of that "oomph" I suppose.
