"Yo Ed, I wasn't making fun of you, I was making fun of all those fuckwits insinuating that you can't form an opinion after said number of listens. It's like saying you can't form an opinion on a book after reading it once or twice; a load of bullshit."
Nah I got it, i agree.

A lot of albums have taken time to grow on me but I'm usually able to see the potential for that to happen on my first couple of listens.
Also, a lot of the criticism being thrown at this album over the last couple of pages is based on the vocals and it's ridiculous to imply that you can't judge whether or not you like a particular singing voice until you've heard a whole album of it more than twice.

"if you were to listen to an album numerous times with the intention of enjoying it, you will eventually condition yourself to enjoy it."
This has to be one of the stupidest things I've read in this site and that's saying something. OvDeath said it all.

"if you were to listen to an album numerous times with the intention of enjoying it, you will eventually condition yourself to enjoy it."
nah Gard3n it's true to an extent. When I'd just begin getting into music and browsing random music sites like this one, I'd just take the high ranking albums of the "edgier" genres (wich was for me five years ago post-hardcore, lol) and jam with the firm intention of liking what I listened to (thus succesfully conditionning my pleasure). Although deep inside me I somewhat actually knew it wasn't my cup of tea and thankfully as time passed I more and more learned to aknowledge my gut like digging/love and finally accepted I'd been a tool for one day saying I appreciated BS like La Dispute.
In the end I believe it's possible to condition yourself into liking stuff but also that your guts will help you get out of that conditionning in the end to show your real appreciation you get out of your jams
Finally this applies to even good records where it's possible to condition and force yourself into a difficult sound but in the end get a real payoff out of it; a little bit like love in general where the beginning of a relation always slightly implies both parties to force themselves to be together to see if it actually works
tl;dr: conditionning exists, is applied by oneself, and can even be occasionally useful for a first step into something new, but only for so long until you aknowledge your actual feels, where the truth lies

i guess it all really just depends. like i've listened to unit structures (cecil taylor) like 10 times and i still don't like it.
but then i didn't dig any boc for years, but jammed geogaddi last month and loved it.
and then there's music i liked but don't anymore (98% of pop punk, alt rock, phxc, punk, etc.)
and then there's music i thought was complete shit but don't anymore (nicki minaj, mainstream radio pop).

I listen to music depending on my mood or based or the changes happening in my life. I cannot conceive the idea of forcing yourself to like something, because I tried it many times before and failed miserably. There's plenty of albums with an average or superior scores of 4 in this site than I just don't like. Maybe they'll click with me some time in the future on a random, non forced, listen, but until then I'll stick with the music I like and enjoy.

I like birth pains more sometimes. And sometimes heaven and weak, but mostly just for that brilliant transition

Heaven and Weak is #1 for me currently but it usually switches between Birth Pains, Watering Can and Ferryman. Those are my top 4 either way.

I don't really invest in the concept of GOAT, but if I did Choirs would be one of the first albums I looked at (certainly from the last two decades). This is awesome and cohesive and all, but it doesn't hit the same highs.
