I can understand disliking Crow a lot more than disliking this but I love both, this is definitely better though.

I mean look at what sufjan does with an acoustic guitar on death with dignity. It wrings out so much emotion and is still so melodious

Oh it’s by Mount Erie. I tried checking out their album with the moon on it a while back but couldn’t get into it

this is great but I believe this is still very overrated

This is musically superior for sure but Crow is going for a very different aesthetic and I think it achieves that successfully. It's a much more difficult listen than this but not without any musical merit either.

Yeah to an extent, I can see why everyone likes this so much tho, it's just a little underdeveloped imo

ye don't get me wrong, there are great tracks on here but yeah missing something for me. though I think it achieves what it's going for. As a whole- I can't really put my finger on it tbh

I think the Mount Erie is sad, confused and in shock. Hard stuff to listen to. This album is sad too, but it's cathartic. It's a release, lyrically and musically, so a much easier listen... the same but different.

Didn’t he say in some interview that either writing the album, or playing it live, made him feel worse instead of better? I can’t remember which one

I didn't read that, but it makes sense. It must be hard singing these songs every night. I love it, but I couldn't take it every day.

Yeah I mean I wouldn't want to recount all these painful memories all the time for other people's enjoyment

If he hated performing this album live that just makes me hate the live version even more.

Live version of this is best live album ever, except The King of Limbs: LthB, but that's basically in a studio.

I do have to say that the fact that Sufjan has milked so much out of this era of his career (with the live album and now The Greatest Gift) does cheapen this album slightly. Obviously this album has been successful and acclaimed and it is natural to want to get what he can out of that success but at the same time I feel like this album should be a singular experience rather than just any other set of songs.

Have you heard the new songs on The Greatest Gift? They measure up to this imo, and the live album is amazing. He changed half of the song's arrangements in places, and added a singer to most of the songs.
I'd get where you're coming from, but when all the content is so stellar, I just feel grateful for all the additions, not cynical.
I know you're not saying this, but I don't think of the additions as cheap cash grabs or anything. Even if the milking of this album seemed shallow or for the $, it shouldn't take away from the meaning and emotional impact this album has, with or without the extra stuff.

Hey guys, remember when Sufjan dropped All Delighted People without warning and Adz right on top of it? Then remember how made three albums out of this album, which BTW, has a runtime 15min shorter than the All Delighted People EP?
Sufjan is one of my fave artists period but I think it is pretty clear that he needs to leave this material alone and let it breathe a bit.

Well I do think Sufjan tries to actively distinguish between what are his "real" albums and what are the side projects - he has enough self-control to condense his work into separate units but not enough to keep all of his artistic impulses to himself.

I agree with Boney. Mourning should be treated with solemnity and not capitalized on to release Dead Mom Album: Deluxe Edition or whatever he's been doing this year.

I have, adored it. Such a beautifully filmed experience. Gd shit. Sufjan's tracks are a delight also

After the two songs for that and the one for Tonya, it seems like he's trying to get into soundtracking mainstream films, which is fine by me because it results in these excellent one-off songs in between the long waits of his albums.
