It's also the closest they've gotten to their heavier sound again since they started doing the traditional prog sound

ICV is probably the ''bulkiest'' and most sonically pleasing of the last three. Orchestral parts really elevated it, but honestly I find the solo on ''Lovelorn Crime'' the biggest lost opportunity in their career. Mikael told Fredrik to write his ''Comfortably Numb'' solo, and Fredrik went on and repeated the vocal lines like a newb

I'd have to check out Lovelorn Crime again, but I remember it being in my top 3 songs for that album. Absolutely beautiful melodies... I really feel like it could have made it onto an album like Watershed or Ghost Reveries

Probably yes. And it *is* a great song, but the solo is a lukewarm mediocrity.

Sorceress is my favorite of the post-Watershed albums tbh. It's a bit bloated and not very cohesive, but I love how eclectic it is. Plus, the folkier songs are just beautiful. It's the only album of the band's traditional prog era that doesn't suffer from being homogeneous imo

really, I think the last album is their best prog album besides heritage, the next album after their last one, and I haven't believed this in many years for opeth, is going to be awesome I feel.

"Have you ever seen the aftermath of giving up?"
Pretty meta considering how fans generally feel about progpeth...lol

Checking this again. Cusp of Eternity is better than I remembered lol.
Moon Above, Sun Below is the masterpiece here.

Eternal Rains is my fave, by far. Like Cusp too. And River.

I feel like the album loses quite some steam in the middle. Elysian Woes is pretty great, whike also being very quiet. The problem is a quite boring track like Goblin, that's following. River needs some time to get going too, even though it's pretty great in and of itself. So that's where the album a little bit of pacing issue imo. Voice of Treason and Faith in Others are a great way to close the album, but you can't deny that there is some energy missing here.

@Trif: Oh, MASB has all the great melodies I love about Opeth. If someone likes Morningrise and Orchid, they should probably like that one too. It's very similar in attitude, just putting together ideas on ideas, stream of consciousness style

Nothing on here can touch Strange Brew, Sorceress or the mellower folky Will O the wisp from the follow up.

But then again I bet there are songs that they can't touch either.
