I actually now have a glimpse of what people mean when they complain about Radiohead fans.

Every song of theirs I've heard sounds dry as a bale of hay, and evokes no sense of sonic depth or richness. Those include numerous songs from this album and Alligator.
I wish I could get into this band though. Please suggest a song you feel is "drenched in wine and longing and ambiance", because sadly I'm yet to hear one

can you forget what you've been saying and just listen to Boxer for me, please?

it's incredibly hard to recommend one song... I feel like almost all of them are different plays on that feeling I just described; the band achieves amazing nuance without sharp changes in structure or feeling or songwriting or whatever

@benkim No, people complain about Radiohead fans as being overly defensive or dedicated
I used them as a point of reference because I've had The National recommended to me by fellow Radiohead fans, because of them supposedly being somewhat similar. a 'you like band A, you'll probably like band B' type scenario
Approaching The National in the way recommended to me - as a Radiohead-ish band - I found them to have almost none of the attributes I like about band A, nor did any unexpected qualities jump out at me

will listen to Boxer now and report back

Fair enough bud but...
"Approaching The National in the way recommended to me - as a Radiohead-ish band - I found them to have almost none of
the attributes I like about band A, nor did any unexpected qualities jump out at me"
is a terrible way to go at it. Wipe the Radiohead comparison from your mind then listen to the band without any expectations and take what comes from the speakers for what it is. You are missing out, hope you'll see the light haha

Also, the band in general is a real grower for many people!

*looks at poly's ratings and thinks "hey he might just not like the national based on his other likes"*
but if there's a band you really like to approach them as a parallel to, I would say... MBV, I guess?

idk i think almost anyone with a strong interest in music could at the very least appreciate these guys, theyre just incredibly good at what they do. probably 75% of what i listen to is metal/"extreme" music but these guys are easily top 5 bands for me
|
| |
yeah, the trend that caught my eye was just that there was so much ZaNyyyy~~ offTHEWALLL stuff there that is so intentionally ~randum~ or weird or whatever while the national is much more nuanced and monotone and requires a little more patience

Liking Boxer more than anything else I've heard, but it might be the case this band just ain't for me
Sombre music for me also has to be eclectic and animated. That's why I love Radiohead, MBV, Neutral Milk Hotel, and R.E.M... but bands like American Football, The Smiths and The National just sorta bore me :/ sadness to me is much more beautiful and profound when it isn't rendered solely in grey. My loss I guess

the smiths is grey to you?

I like music that has an air of unpredictability and innovation to it, sue me

whateva, different strokes
at least your dislike of them makes some sense
and at least you tried

yep, patience is the word. [almost] nothing this band does is immediately awe-inspiring, their stuff takes time before you start appreciating the little string melodies in the background, the genius behind devendorf's simplistic drumming, etc etc.
