"but Ashes is a bit more well put-together imo"
for sure.

the drumming on this for example is sloppy sometimes, whereas on Ashes it is impeccable (and impeccably produced I should add). while i won't say this is amateurish, it's definitely not as 'professional' as Ashes

who cares if ashes is more pro-tooled you pansies. It doesn't even have the sound of a rock striking the skull of a northwestern elk.

I'd bet my bank account that agalloch put more effort into the compositions of Mantle than any other album. They'd agree this is their magnum opus.

Yeah, you can't make a classic album without an elk skull. What rock have you been living under?

yeah, that is pretty cool they did that. But then again the sound of feet walking through the snow was a blatant rip off from Bergtatt... or homage as some people would probably like to argue.

Homage or not, it conveys atmosphere thats for sure
Still one of my all time favorite albums

"part of what makes this more charismatic really"
Honestly Jac, I never got this mode of thinking. Raw production is one thing, something with a few fuck-ups left in because of overwhelming passion is another (like certain hardcore albums, especially), but something actually being better due to sloppy playing doesn't really make any sense to me.

Whoa didn't realise Agalloch albums had such a ridiculous number of votes

"why"
They've always underwhelmed me for some reason. I recall liking AATG more than this however.
Will eventually revisit them though. To the guy who said "3 equals shit for pleb users xDDD meme vocab"
This album is not shit.

on my first listen i thought this dragged a little because it lacked the heavier metal aspect that Pale Folklore had. The more I listen to it though, the less I care about that. This doesn't drag at all. This album really exerts a strong atmosphere and has some really moving material.

I love the intro reprise at the end of The Great Cold Death of the Earth. This video I found puts them together and its an interesting version

I've always wished this album ended with that reprise. That would just be perfect and it would probably bump this from #14 into my top 10 albums.
