"Thirty-Three", "Boys Fear..." and of course "1979" justify disk 2's existence, and "Bodies" and "Scorched Earth" are major guilty pleasures. I guess "XYU" and "Ruby" are decent epics and worth an occasional spin. The rest I don't care about. Maybe it's just my attention span but I don't think so, Billy clearly knew his reach was beyond his grasp and put the best stuff on disk 1 then frontloaded disk 2 and put the best song on it too so you'd have a reason to listen to that occasionally. Disk 1 is pretty much straight hits though, that on its own I rate 4.5/5. Disk 2 is a generous 3.5. What's disappointing is that this is almost there but there are about 40 minutes of fairly weak material here that drag it down.

Disc 2 i think takes things to the extreme a bit more. 1979 -> Tales -> Ruby and Stumbleine -> XYU -> We Only Come Out... are probably their most extreme runs of songs as far as tonal changes go, and it actually works. a lot of people default into saying 1 is the stronger disc, but it's just more instantly accessible

Also, people who think "Tales" sucks don't get this band.

At least 80% of my enjoyment of this is from disk 1, I always treated disk 2 more like a bonus disk.

But....disc 2 is just as good, arguably better even.

vinyl tracklist is infinitely better and removes the uneven disc 1/2 divide agreed

I remember buying this right when it came out. I was absolutely floored by the title track/Tonight Tonight combo. I remember it clear as day. Only 25 years ago. Shit.
