So glad I got to see Sufjan on the tour for this record. The live album of this is fantastic too.

Yeah it creates a buffer between the music and dem feels

but it has a 4.6 here so it resonates with somebody

The songs are really strong here, not just the emotion, so it works in the live context for me

It’s the best kind of live album where it changes the songs just enough to be interesting to listen to beyond just the studio version, but keeping them recognizable.

Is pop to you guys anything that isn't classical or grind?

That’s the definition of pop music in the broadest term possible. Mainstream billboard 200 hits are more specific obviously.

Reminds me of the debate between the definitions of “heavy metal” and just “metal”

Yeah, to me a "pop song" is pretty much anything that roughly resembles the pop verse/chorus/verse/chorus structure, pop music as a style however usually in addition to that structure has a particular emphasis on hooks/melodicism that not everything with a pop structure necessarily has. However something that has that emphasis on hooks/melodies can also be poppy without necessarily having a clear pop structure. This album doesn't have any straight up pop songs of course, it's certainly poppy in a sense, I mean just listen to the melodies.

This album still shatters me. I've never really gotten into any of Sufjan's other material but I fell head over heels for this when it released. Been a good number of months since I last listened but I'm not sure I'm ready to revisit it again just yet.

Despite the heavy subject matter I find this album very pleasant and listenable (unlike, for example, A Crow Looked At Me).

Agreed. Way way better than that mumble fest.

I don’t know what A Crow Looked At Me is but yea this is a pretty easy and pleasant listen plenty of the time.

I'm actually not into that album at all. Think the 3 before it are all fantastic tho

Sowing's right tbh. There isn't much there in the way of enjoyable music. No melodies or cool soundscapes, just mostly "I'm sad"
