I don't think I would call the aspects that they focus on "banal" at all, but he's definitely 100% correct about lots of Tool fans taking the shit way too seriously. I mean enjoy the music and the art yeah but Maynard isn't fucking god, people take him, his topics of interest and the band in general way too seriously

from what I know about when it came out (which admittedly isn't necessarily much), they were getting some negative reactions from undertow, people thinking they were a group of Nazis or some dumb shit. so they threw a recipe for cookies in German on aenima with some military-ish sounding shit in the background and some dummies were jumping the gun immediately calling them out on being Nazis and whatnot
