TLCW is easily their most iconic album, but I return to this one the most often. The first ~five tracks are so inviting.

"inviting" is the perfect word yea. this is the one i jam the most by a pretty wide margin these days. lcw is incredible but i really gotta be in a particular mood for it going in but moon always welcomes me in

it's funny because I think the best stretch for this album is 6 - 10. (Actually maybe 5-10 because the transition from Tiny Cities to A Different City is just great)
that track sequencing is just great

Isaac had his jaw broken during this album's creation, and he was stuck where he was, the rest of the band went back home after recording, I guess, and he recently shed some pretty interesting light onto the making of the record, explains a lot about the sounds on the record:
''I went to Del Prado, Indiana, where Benny [Massarella, Modest Mouse’s percussionist] was living. Got my face operated on, got my mouth wired shut, and then went back to the studio. I couldn’t go anywhere, and the rest of the band had left, and it was just me and the intern. And I couldn’t sing. On all these tracks, I was just stuck there and I got to do way too much layering.
I was left alone there to build that fucking record, with another guy who felt pretty happy to just be left alone. I obviously didn’t go forth and get my jaw broken for every record, but that was a better record because of it."

That is really interesting about his jaw because this just might be my favorite vocal album ever in terms of all the weird and interesting ways Isaac uses his voice over the course of the album and just how memorable practically every vocal line is. It obviously sucks that he had to go through that but it definitely seems like that impacted the way he approached the vocals here.
