Awake is my absolute favourite Dream Theater album. It's the only one I never get tired of.

Well, I mean this and Images I don't get tired of either. Those three are < 3333

As much as I love this and Images, I do have to be in a specific mood to enjoy them. They do edge towards being cheesy and saccharine at times. Awake, on the other hand, takes itself seriously enough that I can always give it a spin and love it.

Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence is a pretty demanding listen tbh.

Awake > I&W > Scenes > FII > Six Degrees are my top 5. First three are almost on par for me though, and FII and Six Degrees is a close call as well.

And yeah, this hard ^ Scarred is top 5 DT material.

"I'm curious what you guys think is flawed about Awake"
Nothing in particular. This and Images are both just masterpieces.
"i'll even take 6 degrees over it every day of the week"
Hard agree. Six Degrees is 3rd best.

I can see how people dont like Awake as much as this. Imho it's quite simple. SFM is one album, all congs complete each other. This album sounds finished and while it doesnt have that many super standouts we love it as a whole.
Meanwhile Awake has much more diversity in quality, both to worse and better. I still consider it as 5, even though I dont love every song out there. Some are... just there, while some crash your mind

Yea, Awake is very song oriented and there are standouta for sure, but it's not inconsistens imo, it's just very diverse mood- and stylewise. Every song on that album is fun and would be missed if it wasn't there
Scenes From A Memory starts the trend of writing extended jams and albums with that approach often feel like one big journey

I would rate Awake higher, it starts with the awesome "6:00" but I'm not a big fan of the two following songs "Caught In A Web" and "Innocence Faded". For me both songs could have done without a 3rd chorus especially because they're already quite "short" with under 6 minutes.

Caught in a Web is one of their best songs. Also, the idea that Awake isn't a complete album is absurd. Easily one of the most well-realized works in their discography along with Images and Words and Scenes.

Awake is phenomenal, perfect antithesis to Images and Words. My only criticism would be despite its great sequencing, it can feel long (but what DT album doesn’t). It’s top 4 DT regardless

I really dislike Caught in a Web too, this song is surely Dream Thater's one but a little too... poppy? Idk, I dont like the chorus neither in it or in Innocence faded

2nd part of Fatal Tragedy is still the best instrumental part I've ever enountered in prog genre. Only to fight with some moments from Change of Seasons.
As much as I'm tired of DT cocksucking, you gotta give them that.

I'm really surprised of how much I love their music now tbh, because I used to hate them. I only takes me a few albums to know every regular studio album, it good stuff. They're getting too much shit from the Opeth/Steven Wilson camp.
The DT cock sucking is annoying though, true
